Softball fans, here’s this week’s wrap up and a preview for the weekend.
Last Monday official kicked off the softball season with some great match ups; we saw wins from teams such as Taft, Medina Valley, Marion, Marshall, Holy Cross, Antonian, and two Corpus Christi teams - West Oso and Tuloso-Midway.
Antonian kicked off their season with a big win against Lanier, 16-0 in 3 innings. Antonian’s pitcher Maricela Bissaro struck out 7 of the 12 batters she faced.
Tuesday was another historic day, with the first Tuesday Night Live kicking off. Our live scoreboard was a great success and thanks to all those people who helped report scores.
Steele had a big win over Austin Lanier, winning in three innings. Bandera and Somerset had a tough fight ‘til the end with Bandera coming away with a 7-5 victory. Brackenridge and Stevens also had a close one; the Eagles pulled out a 4-3 victory. And Burbank and Boerne fought to the end with Burbank winning 5-4.
Reagan, Clark, and Smithson Valley had no problem in their games. Wagner took one from Madison and Alamo Heights, Roosevelt, Pearsall, and O’Connor all came away with a “W”.
Highlands and Southside had a great game going, with two great catches by centerfielder Tina Luna from Highlands. Highlands also had Bianca Pena on the mound, who had a no-hitter going into the fifth and ending the night with just one hit; Highlands took the game 4-1.
Jefferson’s Andy Rodriguez pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Melissa Mendiola went 4 for 4 batting as they cruised to a win over West Campus.
Memorial beat Sam Houston, but we also forget that a lot of these teams still have players in basketball and soccer. Look for a lot of these teams to improve in the next few weeks.
Tournament weekend kicked off as well. The Brenham Tournament saw big winners like San Marcos and Judson.
The SAISD Tournament showcased Highlands as the big winner as they beat Granbury. Wagner took third place while second year school Steele took consolation. Bianca Pena once again had great pitching; she is now 3-0 with Highlands.
South San Tournament winner Edison beat Harlandale for the championship. Fredericksburg came in third, and McCollum took consolation.
And the ever-so-popular Don Maddox Tournament had Odessa beat Pflugerville for the championship and New Braunfels winning consolation. Odessa’s Hillary Phillips took MVP honors going undefeated on the mount.
All Tournament Team honors:
Odessa – MVP Hillary Phillips, Chelsey Walters, Kristy Smith, Rosie Lopez, Erica Armandrez
Pflugerville - Shelbi Stewart, Scott Ashley, Sarah Moody
New Braunfels - Kate Jones, Alyssa Edwards
CC Moody - Audrey Gonzales
Baseball official started yesterday, with 18 big games kicking things off on Monday. Today once again kicks off our Tuesday Night Live Scoreboard for Baseball, so don’t forget to check out the latest scores live during the action.
Of course we can’t kick off the baseball season without the pre-season rankings.
JJ’s Preseason Unified Rankings
- Reagan
- NB Canyon
- Burbank
- O’Connor
- Smithson Valley
- Mac Arthur
- Boerne
- Stevens
- Kerrville Tivy
- Pleasanton
District 26-5A is one to keep a close eye on. With the two pitching seniors out of Smithson Valley, watch for the Rangers to make a run once again behind Dominic Hamilton and Ben Woodchick. Reagan is looking to defend last years 32-4 record with some help from senior Casey Selsor, while MacArthur won’t be far behind with help from Michael Garza. Madison, Wagner, and Roosevelt are all going to be tough.
District 26-4A is one that could see New Braunfels Canyon pulling away in district with JP Ramirez covering the outfield.
Alamo Heights, Boerne, and Kerrville Tivy look to take charge in District 27-4A. Kerrville Tivy will be on defense of last years 27-4A Championship.
Games to check out this week:
Baseball:
Burbank vs. Stevens
MacArthur vs. Smithson Valley
Madison vs. Wagner
Softball:
O’Connor vs. Del Rio
Judson vs. Churchill
Highlands vs. Antonian
Alamo Heights vs. Floresville
Look for player spotlights and Thursday’s wrap up for more updates, and don’t forget to check out our live scoreboard during Tuesday Night Live.
