The San Antonio Silver Stars returned to the AT&T Center as they faced the Houston Comets in their first preseason game of the 2008 season.

Houston came out firing, taking the early lead. Having only four days of training camp the Stars looked to try to pull things together.  The Comets took the early lead in the first, scoring 28 points to the Stars 17. But San Antonio ended the quarter on momentum with a three pointer from rookie Morenike Atunrase. Atunrase, who was required in a trade with Atlanta, was the 2008 Big 12 Sixth Man Award recipient from Texas A&M University.

In the second quarter the defense stepped things up, holding Houston to only nine points in the quarter. The Stars outscored the Comets 19-8 in the quarter as they went into the locker room tied at 36 .
Kendra Wecker gave the Stars a spark in the second with a sweet three pointer and a lay-up. She would finish with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

In the second half Houston came out shooting, scoring 19 points in the third and the fourth quarter.  The Stars tallied 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters, falling to the Comets 74-68

Former TCU players Adrianne Ross and Sandora Irvin added 13 points in the game.

The Stars were missing five of their players: guard Beck Hammon, Ann Wauters, Sophia Young, Vickie Johnson, and recently-acquired Edwige Lawson-Wade. They will rejoin the team before the start of the 2008 regular season at the conclusion of their overseas seasons.  Houston was also with out fan-favorites Tina Thompson and Michelle Snow, who are also playing overseas.

Houston is under the direction of new head coach and general manager Karleen Thompson. Thompson took over for Van Chancellor, who took the LSU head women’s coaching job so that he could be closer to his family.

San Antonio plays Sacramento in the first regular season game on May 17. The Stars then return home to play the defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury on May 20. The game is going to have a western theme to it since it is the home opener.
