Welcome Back Huskies!

We have just returned from Thanksgiving Break, I hope everyone enjoyed the time off. It was a very much needed break for me. I have a lot tell you about what has been going on in Husky Land.

The week of October 25-27 did everyone get the opportunity to take a trip back in time to the 1940s, in New York with the musical, "Annie." I did and it was wonderful! There was a cast of 85 and is one of the biggest Plays Holmes has ever performed and the first musical in about ten years. It was a great collaboration of all middle and high school actors and actresses; students and faculty together. The night of the premier Director  Anne Bridges face glowed with excitement as she anticipated the first curtain draw. There was teacher cameos by academic dean Christina Salas, and English teachers Lacey Henderson and Brigitte Bedolla on different nights. And an amazing performance by a live dog playing Sandy, Annie's adopted pet. With all  the singing, and the dancing, it sat at the tip of my seat through the whole show, it will be something I will remember for a long time. Congratulations to all the performers and I take my hat off to you all you did a great job!

I would also like to congratulate The Husky Marching band. On October 25th , the band went the Region 10 UIL contest at Gustafson Stadium, where they performed in front three Judges as well as audience of music and band lovers. I am so proud to say they came back home with a Division One rating, which is the most superior. The ratings for UIL standards are based on their performance, marching, and execution. UIL is a contest, not a competition, so any school can earn a division one.  The band has been working hard since the beginning of August on their music and drill marching sets, staying from 8 to 5 for weeks on end in the heat. Students were up for the challenge that marching required of them, having to memorize the music and moves. Way to Husky Band, we are proud of you and your hard work!

How about that Husky Cross Country Team? At the District Cross Country Meet on November 2nd The Varsity girls brought home 3rd place and the Varsity boys brought home 1st . Way to go team. A special shout out to Stephanie Barlow who won 1st place with a time 11:40 and Nathan Pineda who won 3rd with time of 16:10.  The state meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Saturday, November 12 was very exciting as the varsity boys team: Nathan Pineda, Marco Arias, Jeremiah Cardenas, Ismeal Partida, Antonio Ramos, Manuel Carden, and sophomore Stephanie Barlow, represented Holmes High School. The boys' varsity placed tenth over 200 other state teams. Sophomore Stephanie Barlow placed thirtieth, an improvement from her fortieth place finish last year. Congratulations Coach Barlow and team on a great competition, we are proud of you!

What about the Lady Husky Volleyball team? Did you come out a cheer on this great team as they accomplished new goals and a new name? Over the years we have a long string of losing seasons, but not this year, our five varsity seniors and leader Coach Melissa Thrailkill( Coach T) led the way in creating a new legacy for the  Holmes Volleyball team. Seniors: Denali Sturgeon, Angela Rubio, Marla Gonzalez, Dolores De La Cruz, and Krista Rosas, the team posted the best season in years. The hard work, sweat and tears this team has endured this season really paid off. The leadership these ladies demonstrated has made a great path for the underclassman to follow.

The Legacy started this year with you ladies and of course the help of the rest of the team, Sophomores: LaRaysha Hall, Brittanee Patterson, Hailey Rebar, Juniors: Alexandra Wilborne, Gabrielle Winkler, Wendy Rodriguez , Elissa Rodriguez, and Freshman: Samantha Polk. I can honestly say after experiencing such an electrifying season, I can't wait to see what the future Lady Husky Volleyball team has in store for us. Practice hard in the off-season, because the two-a-days and try-outs for next year will be hear before you know it. We look forward to an exciting and successful next year. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments we are so proud of you! Graduating Seniors Best of Luck in your future endeavors.

Before the break, our French Club held a Food Fest and Snack Sale for charity. This year you will be seeing the French Club become more active as they build their brand. They will be participating in many fun activities, socializing, and raising funds for charity and their scholarship. Please help support our French Club as they will be selling candy, soda and chips. If you are interested in joining the French Club, please see Ms. Johnson there is plenty of work and fun to go around. The French Club meets every other Thursday.

I would like to personally thank the ROTC team for all of their hard work in helping keep the campus clean. A clean campus shows our visitors what being a Husky is truly about. We are proud of all of our students, faculty, clubs, theater, band, and athletics. So please do your part everyday and dispose of your trash appropriately. We need to show our visitors that Husky pride and how much we respect our campus.  You can even do a little extra and come out and help. Upcoming campus clean-up days are on: December 6th  and 13th, January 13th and 17th , and February 7th  and 28th. A clean campus is a healthy campus and benefits all of us.

So, is anyone else as sad as I am to hear: "No more "Husky Pause"? Husky Pause, the 20-minute period set aside between third period and lunch to allow free reading time, is no longer part of the school schedule. I love to read, and it was my time to get away from the stress of school work and athletics, and just get a little me time before finishing out the rest of my day. I am so sad, but the adoption of the Freshman House, and the added lunch period to go with it, made it a change that had to happen. We had an increase in students that made it necessary for us to have a three lunch period schedule. Just because we don't have "Husky Pause" anymore, doesn't mean you have to stop reading. Take a look at your schedule of daily activities including school, homework, extracurricular activities, and schedule yourself fifteen to twenty minutes of "you" time to read. Reading is a great way to relax so you can come back to some of your more difficult activities refocused and ready to work.
So we have three more productive weeks of studies before winter break.

As you can see the first half of our school year has been extremely busy. Basketball season is in full swing for the Huskies, and we are also going to have an NBA season! Yeah the lockout is over and the season will begin with three games on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas!

The Husky Boys Basketball team has started off great with two wins. On November 14th, against the Highland Owl 65-52 and November 17th against Marble Falls 76-45. The Mighty Husky Pac was  happy to come home with a 2nd place trophy in NEISD tournament. Defeating MacArthur 62-48; East Central 75-66. The Husky Boys fought a hard fight against the Reagan Rattlers 55-60. Congratulations to Joseph Jackson for being named Player of the Week the week of November 20th. Way to go Joe.

Later on that week we took home another win against Johnson 67-51 and had another opportunity to post up against the Reagan Rattlers. We just couldn't hold'em 47-68. Next time boys.

The boys keep their heads up and came ready to play last night, November 29th against Sam Houston. The game was intense. We fought hard until the end going into overtime, Sam Houston overcame the Huskies, winning 62-59. Come support the boys this weekend as they compete in the Austin Bowie Tournament. Good Luck Boys we are rooting for you.

Here we go! The Lady Husky Basketball were very confident going into this season. With some key returning players the team is with a lot of heat and class.  The ladies are pushing for excellence and ready to take on new challenges. The Ladies started off the season with against Brackenridge, the girls played hard but couldn't hold Brackenridge, 46-53. The Husky ladies, shook off the loss and prepared for their competition in the Corpus Christi tournament.

The Ladies made a good start with an easy defeat against  Miller(TX) 75-21; Vandegrift gave the Husky Lady Pac a challenge, with all their might the Huskies just couldn't hold on to the lead, losing 34-40. They didn't give up or hold their heads down, then came ready to fight for a win against Carroll(TX) all of their push and work wasn't enough to hold down a win Carroll(TX) overcame the Huskies 43-57. The Lady Huskies returned rested and ready to win the next morning defeating all three challenges: HCYA(TX) 47-34;Houston Academy(TX) 49-30 and Brenham(TX) 62-58; bring home fourth place. Way to go Huskies.

Three days later after a tough weekend competition the Lady Huskies returned to San Antonio to post up against  the Highland Owls. The Owls worked hard to try to overcome Kelly Moreno's accuracy in her three point shots. Kelly was 4 of 5 3 point attempts and 4 or 8 field goal attempts racking up 20 points. Malaysia Sheridan, Abby Arredondo, Crystal Rodriguez, Emerald Herrera, Megan Torres, Danielle Whitmer and the rest of the Husky team worked seamlessly together to defeat the Owls  55-27. Way to go Huskies. Great Job.

The highlights don't stop there as we head into the weekend to the Southside Tournament. First challenge the Kennedy Rockets the girls shot the rockets out of the sky winning 48-25. The next opponent the Memorial Minutemen could keep the time against the mighty Husky Pac. They fought hard but could keep up, losing 63-26. The next day the Husky Pac came rested and ready to win as they challenged the Lee Volunteers. Lee didn't volunteer many turnovers or points holding the Huskies to only a one point win, 37-36, they fought until the end. Way to go Huskies. Later on that evening the Husky Pac couldn't persevere, losing to the Medina Valley Panthers. But the next morning the Huskies were rested and ready to fight again posting up against the Jones Trojans and bringing home a win 40-26. We are very proud of the 3rd place ranking the Lady Huskies achieved in the tournament. Keep up the good work ladies. The season has just begun!

During the break the Huskies took on the Reagan Rattlers, they slivered passed the Huskies in a 50-17 win. The Lady Huskies came back from break with their game faces on, and ready to take on the Sam Houston Hurricanes last night November 29th. The Huskies Pac had a good start, but soon lost their lead as the Hurricanes twisted passed the Huskies with a 44-33 win.

So alright all you Husky Fans, you see we have a lot of activities here in Husky Land. Please show your support and come out and cheer us on!
