Three-run rally gives Alamo Heights 6-5 win over Bastrop
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Adrian Nadeau scored from third on a wild pitch to complete a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Alamo Heights Mules a 6-5 victory over the Bastrop Bears Friday afternoon at the Muleyard in a Gaylard Fenley Classic contest.
The rally made a winner of Garrett Rose (1-0), who threw two shutout innings in relief of starter pitcher Nadeau. Nadeau moved to left field when Rose came in to pitch.
Alamo Heights (2-0) trailed 5-3 going to the bottom of the ninth. Luke Maloy led off with a single to right, then went to second on a wild pitch from Colton Tucker. Tucker walked Mike Warren, then threw consecutive wild pitches to score Maloy, making it 5-4, and advancing Warren to third as the tying run with nobody out. Nadeau, still on the hook as the losing pitcher when he came to bat in the seventh, fouled off three pitched before doubling to the left field wall to drive in Warren and tie the game.
With the go-ahead run at second, Bastrop intentionally walked Chris Bennert. Nick Lerick bunted the runners ahead one base for out #1, then Bastrop intentionally walked Connor Hedges to load the bases.
Although Bastrop’s left-handed left fielder, Jaryd Hodgson, had left the ballgame to warm up in the bullpen, Bastrop coach Mark Williams left Tucker on the hill to face the left-handed hitting Zach Cleveland. Tucker’s first pitch to Cleveland bounced in the dirt for Tucker’s fourth wild pitch of the inning; Nadeau scored easily to give Alamo Heights the win.
Bastrop took the early lead by scoring two runs in the first without a hit, then extended it in the third when Justin Froncek tripled home Pete Rodriguez, then scored himself on a wild pitch.
Maloy cut the deficit to 4-1 with an RBI single in the third, but Bastrop got the run back when Hodgson walked, took second and third on wild pitches, and scored on an errant pickoff throw.
Maloy, who went 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, led off the fifth with a double, then scored when Warren reached on a three-base throwing error. Foreshadowing the game’s ending, Warren scored on a wild pitch to bring the Mules within 5-3.

Passing game, three pointers lead to 70-62 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Stan Leech’s Boerne teams have won four district championships in the last five seasons, and have made the playoffs nine straight years.
In 2009-10, however, with a team including only three seniors, the Chargers struggled, losing five of their first seven district games, and in danger of falling out of the playoff race altogether.
Despite this, Alamo Heights coach Charlie Boggess said before his team’s game against Boerne Champion that he wouldn’t be surprised if they won every game the rest of the way.
Boggess probably wishes he weren’t so insightful after Boerne Champion’s 70-62 victory Friday night at Boerne Champion Gym.
Boerne Champion (18-11, 3-5 in 27-4A) built up a 29-15 halftime lead with strong rebounding, crisp passing, and five three-pointers. The Chargers unofficially recorded 14 assists on their 25 field goals.
Alamo Heights (19-9, 5-3 in 27-4A) dominated the bounds in the first round of district, outrebounding the Chargers 38-17 in a 53-38 victory at the Muledome. However, Steven Elder, who grabbed 13 of those rebounds, was lost to the Mules for the season due to an ACL injury in the Tivy game January 19th. His absence not only cost the Mules rebounds, it allowed Boerne Champion to negate Jeffrey Rodewald as a factor. Rodewald, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds in the first meeting, was limited to 5 points Friday night, and the Mules had to run their halfcourt offense from the perimeter the entire night.
Boerne Champion’s James Rogers scored 20 points, had four assists, and probably registered a double-double with his rebounds. After a 10-0 Mule run brought Alamo Heights within six at 39-33 with 2:03 remaining in the third, Rogers helped fend off the Mules by making all eight of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. James’ sophomore younger brother David added 12 points and five assists, while juniors Connor Czar and Matt McKinney each scored 10.
Alamo Heights used a press in the second half to try to change the pace of the game. The accelerated tempo opened up their offense, as Brandon Garcia scored 17 second half points and Thomas Villanueva scored 14 in the second half. For all their efforts, however, Alamo Heights only outscored the Chargers 47-41 in the second half.
The Heights loss, combined with Tivy’s victory over Seguin, gives the Antlers a two game lead with five dates to go in 27-4A. Boerne Champion pulls within one game of fourth-place Seguin with the victory.

27-4A saw Boerne Champion upset Alamo Heights 70-62, behind a solid performance by senior Janes Rogers, who scored 20. Combine that with Kerrville Tivy’s 60-49 win over Seguin and Steele’s 81-58 victory at sister school Clemens, and the playoff race is getting interesting. Current standings:
Kerrville Tivy 7-1
Alamo Heights 5-3
Steele 4-3
Seguin 4-4
Boerne Champion 3-5
NB Canyon 2-5
Clemens 2-6

Thirteen three-pointers carry Chargers to 59-40 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
After trailing 11-6 in the first quarter, the Boerne Champion Chargers went on a 13-0 run, then pulled away for a 59-40 victory Tuesday night at Boerne Champion high school.
Boerne Champion (16-8, 3-0 in 27-4A) took the lead for good on Claire Sullivan’s three-pointer with a fraction of a second left in the first quarter. The shot helped the Chargers close the quarter on an 8-0 run, which they extended to 13-0 in the second.
Paige Grandjean led the Chargers with 17 points, including three trays and 4 of 5 shooting from the free throw line. Katie Smith followed Grandjean with 15 points, all on three-pointers, three in the decisive second quarter. Boerne Champion scored 13 three-pointers and eight two-pointers, plus Grandjean’s four free throws.
Boerne Champion scored consistently throughout the game, netting 14 in the first quarter, 15 in the second, 16 in the third, and 14 in the fourth. For one quarter, Alamo Heights was keeping up.
Alamo Heights (7-12, 0-4 in 27-4A) built an 11-6 lead early thanks to Stephanie Wittman. The future Kansas State Wildcat scored 7 points in the first quarter, and finished with a game-high 18.
Given the wakeup call, the Chargers responded with a three from Grandjean and a basket by freshman Heather Hormuth to tie the game, setting up Sullivan’s quarter-ending trey which gave Boerne Champion the lead for good.
The second quarter began in unusual fashion, as Boerne Champion inbound the ball to open the quarter, passed it around for 1:02, then called timeout. The game remained 14-11 until Smith’s first three-pointer with 4:40 left in the half. Combining a press with a patient passing game, Boerne Champion outscored Alamo Heights 15-6 in the second quarter on their way to a 29-17 halftime lead.
The victory kept Boerne Champion tied for first place with Steele, who defeated the other then-undefeated-in-district-team, Clemens. With Seguin’s win over Tivy, Alamo Heights is now the last winless team in District 27-4A play.
ALAMO HEIGHTS SCORING: Stephanie Wittman 18, Ashley Canty 8, Natalie Weyand 6, Jackie Cabello 4, Abbey Strunk 4, Megan Solomon, Sally Stecher, Jordan Ploetz
BOERNE CHAMPION SCORING: Paige Grandjean 17, Katie Smith 15, Brooke Allemand 10, Claire Sullivan 8, Heather Hormuth 4, Shelby Easley 3, Hilary Lumpkins 2, Brooke Eckard, Sam Cardenas, Lolly Kelly, Madison Champion

Seniors defeated 12-6 in 2009 San Antonio All-Star Game
by Mark Kusenberger

Stevens’ Rene Solis doubled home the go-ahead run, and Boerne Champion’s Chad Long followed with a two-run homer in the 7th to lead the Junior team to a 12-6 victory over the Senior team in the San Antonio Area All-Star Game Tuesday night at North East Stadium.
After giving up two runs in each of the first two innings, the Junior pitchers twirled six shutout innings. The rally made a winner of Alamo Heights’ Luke Maloy. Steele’s Hunter Flake, who was victimized by all six unearned runs, was the losing pitcher.
Each team used nine pitchers for one inning apiece, and each team used 16-player batting orders to maximize participation. Each team also inserted an extra batter into the lineup in the 5th inning, a common occurrence in high school all-star games.
The Seniors took an early lead against Medina Valley’s Weston Heiligman. Boerne Champion’s Niko Gonzalez led off with a double; one out later, Central Catholic’s Roger Zamarripa walked. Del Rio’s Jack Mayfield grounded into a force play; Zamarripa was out, but Gonzalez went to third. MacArthur’s Nick Smelser doubled down the left field line to score Gonzalez, then Mayfield scored on a wild pitch, giving the seniors a 2-0 lead.
The lead was extended against O’Connor’s Marc McGraw. Madison’s Nick Lee and Churchill’s Clint Sharp led off with back-to-back singles. One out later, O’Connor’s Cody Scott singled home Lee, then San Antonio Christian’s Trey Catalani drove in Sharp with a fielder’s choice grounder, moving the Seniors to a 4-0 lead.
The South finally broke through against Liberty Hill’s Gene Lucas, an apparent last minute addition who wasn’t listed on www.jimscout.com at this writing. Lucas walked Medina Valley’s Troy Stein and Reagan’s Brad Hall, then hit Johnson’s Jacoby Almarez with a 2-2 pitch to load the bases. Stevens’ Rene Solis then singled up the middle to drive in Stein and Ford. An error on a snap-throw by the catcher allowed Almarez and Solis to advanced a base, then two outs later, Almarez scored on a wild pitch to cut the margin to 4-3 seniors.
Then the pitchers took over. Starting with Lucas retiring the last three batters he faced, the seniors retired 12 straight, with New Braunfels Canyon’s Tony Gonzales, Marion’s Jordan Littlefield, and Clark’s Carl O’Neal all recording 1-2-3 innings. Meanwhile, rom the third through the eighth, junior pitchers faced only two over the minimum. Comfort’s Michael Wright, Judson’s Cody Boswell, Madison’s Chris Penn, Alamo Heights’ Luke Maloy, Boerne Champion’s Dylan Boss, and Harlandale’s Geoffrey Curtin each turned in an inning during the stretch. Boswell struck out two batters looking, and Maloy struck out the side swinging.
The Juniors took the lead for good in the seventh, scoring six unearned runs on just two hits. Steele’s Hunter Flake walked Reagan’s Alex Kendall and Medina Valley’s Troy Stein, but got Reagan’s Brad Hall to hit into a double play, advancing Kendall to third. Flake then struck out Almarez, but strike three was a wild pitch, allowing Almarez to try to go to first. Scott’s throwing error trying to retired Almarez allowed Almarez to reach and Kendall to score the tying run, and the inning continued.
Solis followed with his run-scoring double, then Long homered on an 0-2 pitch to put the juniors ahead 7-4.
MacArthur’s Patrick Ward and South San’s Rene Gallegos scored the remaining two runs in the inning as the juniors took advantage of a hit batsman, a walk, and two more errors. It was 9-4 Juniors after seven.
The Juniors added two more runs in the eighth against Reagan’s Corbin Oakes. Oakes struck out the first two hitters he faced before Churchill’s Dustin Aguilar singled and Boerne Champion’s Taylor Davis walked. Both scored on a double down the left field line by O’Connor’s T.J. Greene, making it 11-4 Juniors.
The Juniors added a final run in the 9th off Reagan’s Carter Hahn. Brad Hall hit a sharp grounder through third baseman Tijerina’s legs to reach on a error. Hall went to second on a grounder by Almarez, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a grounder by Solis. It was Solis’s fourth RBI of the night, pushing the Juniors’ lead to 12-4. Long followed with a double to the left field gap to go with his homer, but was stranded.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Seniors did strike back against Hall. Mayfield got a one-out single; after the second out, Burbank’s Alex Salas struck out, but reached on a passed ball, the second time in the ballgame a two-out strikeout failed to end an inning. After a double-steal, Mayfield and Salas scored on a sharp single to right by Justin Beck. Nick Lee drew a walk, but he and Beck were stranded when Hall struck out Sharp to end the game.
The matchup of seniors vs. juniors meant several players got to hit against a former teammate’s pitch.
2nd inning – O’Connor – senior Cody Scott gets an RBI single against Marc McGraw.
4th inning – New Braunfels Canyon – senior Tony Gonzales strikes out junior Tyler Figol.
5th inning – Madison – junior Chris Penn strikes out senior Nick Lee.
8th inning – Reagan – junior Alex Kendall draws a walk from senior Corbin Oakes.
9th inning – Reagan – junior Brad Hall reaches on an error and scores against senior Carter Hahn.

Almquist & Maloy combine to four-hit Moody in 1-0 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Staff Writer
www.TSRNsports.com
Alamo Heights coach Glynn Tschirhart said he had a plan.
Goodness knew the Mules need one, going into their Class 4A Region IV Semifinal best-of-three series against the Moody Trojans. Moody (32-2) has won two state championships in the past five years. They were #1 in the state among Class 4A teams, and got there by defeating #2 Calallen, the defending Class 4A State Champion. They were #2 in the United States of America. They had won 27 straight games going into Thursday. They were 32-1 going into Thursday, and had scored at least 10 runs in 22 of their games. With victories over Laredo United, Austin Westlake, and Mission Sharyland, they had victories over three of the four Class _5A_ Region IV Semifinalists.
But Tschirhart had a plan, and that plan involved junior left hander Michael Almquist starting Game One on the hill for the Mules Thursday Night at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.
And Almquist was brilliant, pitching 5 and 1/3 shutout innings before making way for Luke Maloy as they combined for a 4-hitter, leading Alamo Heights (27-5) to 1-0 victory over the Moody Trojans to take a 1-0 lead their best of three series. The winner will face the winner between defending champion Corpus Christi Calallen and Lake Travis for a berth in the state tournament.
It was the first shutout Moody had suffered since April 19, 2008 against Corpus Christi Ray.
Almquist (4-1) had not pitched since April 20th against New Braunfels Canyon, and didn’t make it out of the first inning of that game. But he pitched out of several jams, including a first-and-third-with-two-out situation in the first and a first-and-second-with-one-out then second-and-third-with-two-out in the fourth.
Alamo Heights escaped their toughest jam in peculiar fashion. With one out and Heights ahead 1-0, Marcus Villanueva walked and Christian Garza-Gallegos singled; when Garza-Gallegos’s base hit was dropped in right field, both runners advanced, putting the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second. The Mules intentionally walked Rudy Flores (nine homers for the season) to load the bases. Next, Justin Meza, Moody’s cleanup hitter, tried a suicide squeeze with an 0-2 count and the bases loaded. Meza bunted the ball foul; as a result, Meza struck out and the runners had to return to their bases.
Then with a 1-2 count on Michael Franco and two down, Villanueva tried to steal home plate. Almquist’s pitch was outside to the right-handed hitting Franco, but arrived in plenty of time for catcher Chris Bennert to tag out Villanueva to end the inning.
Franco led off the sixth with a double, and Gerardo Gutierrez sacrificed him to third. But then Tschirhart played his ace, bringing Luke Maloy to the mound to pitch for the save. Maloy got pinch hitter Randy Rodriguez to pop out, and Justin Perales to ground out to preserve the lead.
Maloy pitched a perfect seventh to earn the save.
The Mules got their only run against a brilliant Justin Meza (13-1) in the fourth. Maloy pushed a single up the middle to lead of the inning, then went to second on Mike Warren’s single to left. Trent Jones bunted to advance the runners; Meza threw to third to try to retire the lead runner, but Maloy beat his throw to load the bases. Moody elected to concede the run for the double play, and got what they thought they wanted when Christ Bennert grounded into a twin killing, allowing Maloy to score.
Officially, Bennert was not awarded an RBI on the play. But Bennert and his teammates, enjoying the biggest win in the history of Alamo Heights baseball, are surely too jubilant to care.

It’s not often that someone with the #17 plays a game on her 17th birthday, but Sabrina Gonzalez did exactly that last night against Alamo Heights.

And it’s hard to believe that since SAsports.com started in 2001, this was our first Tour Stop ever for Alamo Heights. The Lady Mules responded with an 11-3 win over Clemens. This victory put Alamo Heights in a three-way tie for second with Seguin and Boerne Champion at 4-3 in 27-4A.

Alex Gracia fired some heat for the Lady Buffs.

Natalie Weyand did the same for Heights.

Taylor Johnson has made her family proud this season.

Clemens Coach Lauren Zimmerman instructs from the third base coaching box.

Safe at third… and AH Coach Alma Goodwin agrees.

The Lady Mules made plays when they needed them the most.

Clemens made a few rallies, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Coach Goodwin liked what she saw last night. One big highlight: Courtney Carr of Alamo Heights led off the bottom of the 1st with an inside-the-park homer.
