Bulldogs rotation defeats Boerne 61-45

by Mark Kusenberger

Somerset coach Bryan Penna drew a lot of attention to his Bulldogs when he began his new substitution pattern.

Penna, modeling their approach after 3A state champion Dallas Madison, would start five players, let them play about four minutes, then play another five for the rest of the quarter. It kept players fresh, and gave opponents the effect of preparing for two teams.

But Penna is not hidebound by this setup, and his willingness to adjust was a key to Somerset’s 61-45 victory over the Boerne Greyhounds Friday evening at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.

With 2:13 left in the third quarter, Boerne was on a 5-0 run and had cut a nine-point deficit to 22-19. Penna brought back his starters ahead of schedule – his “first bunch” as he called them before the game – and they quickly built the lead back up to nine. Somerset slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter after that.

In the first half, Somerset’s “second bunch” outperformed the first. Starters Demetrio Zepeda, Jacob Hillyer, James Cantu, Luis Yanez, and Israel Vasquez played the first 4:09 of the first quarter and the first 4:57 of the second, outscoring Boerne 8-7, but the “second bunch” of Luke Villalpando, Jake Cantu, Steve Dorman, Will Harlos, and Devin Judkins outscored the Greyhounds 12-4, totaling to a 20-11 halftime lead. Seven different Bulldogs scored in the first half, although none scored more than four points.

Boerne (21-14), on the other hand, depended on Zachery Evans for scoring. Evans scored 9 of Boerne’s 11 first half points, as Somerset used their height to block shots and dominate the boards. Somerset lists six players at 6’5.

Boerne coach Kimble McHone responded by inserting 6’6 sophomore post Tyler Driskill. Driskill responded by scoring a career-high 11 points, including eight in the third quarter. But after Driskill’s free throw early in the fourth, Somerset shut him out the rest of the game.

Evans led all scorers with 16 points. Five Somerset players scored from eight to eleven points, a typical showing for the Bulldogs. Hillyer, scoreless in the first half, finished with a team-high eleven.

Somerset outscored Boerne 30-23 during the first three quarters and 31-22 during the fourth.

Somerset (33-3) will play for the Class 3A Region Championship Saturday afternoon against Stafford.

39-29 victory over Bandera puts them one game out of third place

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Boerne limited Bandera to 12 points over the first three quarters on their way to a 39-29 victory Tuesday evening at Greyhound Gym.

Bandera came into the ballgame in second place in 30-3A, but struggled mightily with Boerne coach Amy Ruede’s defensive scheme. Boerne (14-16, 4-4 in 30-3A) mixed a press with a 2-3 zone to neutralize the height of Bandera. In the first half, the Lady Bulldogs committed eight fouls and scored only nine points. They also had 20 turnovers compared to 19 field goal attempts.

Only four players scored in the first quarter, with featured a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought with the score stuck at Boerne 4, Bandera 2. Kayla Reynolds’ three-pointer gave Bandera their only lead at 5-4 before Boerne’s Katy Kazan responded with a personal 8-0 run during which five minutes of clock was consumed. Kazan finished with a game-high 15 points.

Boerne’s aggressive offense also created foul trouble for Bandera team leader Chelsea Calahan. Although Boerne’s Bailee Taylor fouled out, Calahan spent most of the first half on the bench with foul trouble and finished with only three points. Bandera got a team-high eight points from Taylor Shackelford, all in the fourth quarter, to help Bandera stay within shouting distance, but drew no closer than nine in the final frame.

Bandera (9-20, 5-3 in 30-3A) fell into a tie for second place with Canyon Lake, who defeated Fredericksburg Tuesday night. Boerne is now one game behind Bandera and Canyon Lake with two games left to play. Bandera and Canyon Lake face each other Friday night at Bandera; Bandera closes against Fredericksburg, while Canyon Lake hosts district-leading Wimberley next Tuesday. Boerne, which is 4-0 in home district games but 0-4 in road district games, finishes at home against district-leading Wimberley and at winless-in-district Ingram Tom Moore.

Greyhounds take big lead, hold on for 53-48 victory over Bandera

by Mark Kusenberger

Chad Long’s nine first quarter points helped Boerne take a first quarter lead, then Michael Stockton’s fourth quarter free throws helped them keep it as the Boerne Greyhounds defeated the Bandera Bulldogs 53-48 Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym.

Long sank three three-pointers for Boerne in the first quarter; the first two each tied the game, and the third gave the Greyhounds (15-15, 4-2 in 30-3A) their 13-8 first quarter lead. The last two treys were part of a 10-0 run which staked Boerne to a 15-8 lead, which Bandera eventually whittled down to 19-18 on free throws by Derek Draper. Boerne responded with a 9-0 run, including Stockton’s score on an assist from Jackson Miller, putting Boerne ahead by 10 once again.

The Greyhounds led by as much as 14 at 42-28 before Bandera (6-15, 0-6 in 30-3A) crept back into the ballgame. Threes by Dustin Linder and Draper capped an 8-0 Bulldog run which closed Bandera within 48-44. Stockton scored Boerne’s last five points, including three of four free throws, to keep Boerne in front at the end.

Long led the Greyhounds with 15 points, followed by Stockton’s 12 and Miller’s 11. Zach Evans through in seven points, all in the third quarter, and provided harassing defense, taking several steals in the first quarter and a crucial one with 37.38 seconds left to help protect the lead late.

Draper, Bandera’s leading scorer with 13 points a game, was limited to five Tuesday night. Jeff Jensen, who averages ten points a game for Bandera, scored ten to lead the Bulldogs despite committing his fourth foul with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter.

The Boerne win, combined with Wimberley’s loss to Ingram Tom Moore and Fredericksburg’s victory at Canyon Lake, leaves Fredericksburg alone in first place in 30-3A at 4-1. Boerne and Wimberley, who face each other Friday in Boerne, are tied for second one game behind Fredericksburg at 4-2; Ingram Tom Moore is in fourth place, one game behind Boerne and Wimberley.

An amazing performance by a BHS freshman goalkeeper

Posted by Jay Tope on January 30, 2010 at 10:14 am

Mariah Escajeda, freshman goalkeeper of the Boerne High School Greyhounds, is already making waves in the high school soccer world.

“It’s hard for me to imagine how anyone could have surpassed her performance this week,” said one of her opponent’s coaches.

Boerne, a brand new 3A program, on the shoulders of the freshman Escajeda, opened its 53-4A season with a 2-0 shutout over Fredericksburg Monday night, then followed that with a 0-0 draw against the powerful Boerne Champion Chargers in the first ever “Boerne Derby.”

Escajeda had an incredible performance. In a match where the ball was in the Boerne third 90+% of the match, she made 26 saves tonight, several of the spectacular variety, and held off a late barrage to preserve the scoreless tie against great Charger offensive players like Tabria Williford, Cassie Lange, Alexa McDaniel and others.

In all, Champion took 51 shots on Friday, and put more than half of them on target. Escajeda stopped them all, including several one-on-one situations where she came out and stuffed attempts from point-blank range. It was a tour-de-force performance. And that it happened in the first ever Boerne-Boerne Champion soccer matchup only made it more special.

And a sophomore shall lead them…

Tomlinson scores with 2.31 seconds left in Fredericksburg’s 38-36 win

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

If you’d told Fredericksburg coach Tim Kaman before Tuesday’s game that Boerne’s defense would limit his top three scorers to 11 points total, he would have gulped.

Fortunately for him, his fourth leading scorer, sophomore Tyler Tomlinson, scored 18 points, including the game-winning basket with 2.31 seconds left to lead Fredericksburg to a 38-36 victory over the Boerne Greyhounds Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym.

Fredericksburg (15-10, 3-1 in 30-3A) scored the last 6 points of the ballgame, shutting out Boerne for the last four minutes of action. The Battlin’ Billies trailed 36-32 before J.P. Evans made a free throw to bring Fredericksburg within three, then Tomlinson sank a three to tie the game at 36.

The game winner came when Fredericksburg ran the clock down to 17.44 seconds left, then inbounded the ball to Taylor Eden. Eden ran the clock down before finding Tomlinson in the left corner of the lane, where Tomlinson hit the game-winning basket. The 38-36 final was Fredericksburg’s first lead since 13-12 late in the first half.

Chad Long had a chance to give Boerne (13-15, 2-2 in 30-3A) a thrilling finish, but his halfcourt shot as time expired bounced off the back of the rim.

The game featured two scrappy defenses, especially in the first quarter. Fredericksburg to a 1-0 lead on a Tomlinson free throw with 6:19 left in the first quarter and made the lead stand until Jackson Miller’s basket with 3:26 remaining in the first. (Fredericksburg shut out Boerne the first four minutes of the game, and the last four minutes of the game.) Baskets by J.P. Evans and Eden had Fredericksburg ahead 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.

After four lead changes and a tie in the second quarter, Boerne closed the quarter on a 10-0 run which they ultimately extended to 17-1. Then Fredericksburg seemed to flip a switch, using a 13-0 run to pull within two early in the fourth, sending the game to its thrilling conclusion.

Boerne committed 13 fouls to Fredericksburg’s 12, but the odd distribution challenged Coach Kimble McCone. Ross Kennell committed five fouls, fouling out with 2:20 remaining and costing Boerne one of its best defenders. Michael Stockton committed four fouls, and like Kennell sat much of the first three quarters due to foul trouble. The rest of the Greyhounds combined for four fouls.

Eden, J.P. Evans, and Ansel Berger-Thayer of Fredericksburg, combine to average 32 points a game, but only scored 11 Tuesday night. Boerne scored 20 points in the second quarter but only 16 the rest of the game.

Going into Tuesday’s action, Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Canyon Lake were all tied for second place in District 30-3A. The Fredericksburg win, combined with Canyon Lake’s loss at Ingram Tom Moore, puts Fredericksburg alone in second, with Boerne and Canyon Lake tied for third. Boerne plays at Canyon Lake Friday night, when 30-3A teams will completed their first round of district play.

Torisk three-pointer sends Boerne to comeback victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

With two seconds left in a 53-53 ballgame, Boerne coach Amy Ruede called timeout.

The staunch Fredericksburg team was about to force a five-second violation, so she took a timeout to avoid a turnover – and draw up a play.

Margaret Riggins inbounded the ball to Austin Torisk, and Torisk hit a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to give Boerne a thrilling 56-53 victory Saturday afternoon at Boerne High School.

Bailee Taylor and Katy Kazan led the Lady Hounds with 13 points apiece; Torisk finished with eight, while Riggins and Katie Moore scored seven apiece.

The game was physical and tense, featuring twelve ties. Compensating for the Lady Billies’ height advantage, Boerne (12-13, 3-1 in 30-3A) employed an aggressive style which led to 23 Fredericksburg fouls to Boerne’s 16. Chenoa Schmidt, Baleigh Schaetter, and Kyla Biedermann all fouled out for Fredericksburg; Torisk and Kazan for Boerne each finished the game with four fouls. After missing 15 free throws in the previous nights’ loss to Bandera, Boerne outscored Fredericksburg 25-7 from the free throw line Saturday afternoon.

For a minute there, it looked like Fredericksburg (4-10, 1-2 in 30-3A) would run Boerne out of the gym. Seven points from Biedermann – a quick three, then layups resulting from Boerne turnovers – staked the Lady Billies to a 7-0 lead just 45 seconds into the game. Ruede called a timeout to stem the tide, and although Fredericksburg did build the lead to 16-6, Boerne went on a 12-2 run to the game at 18 early in the second quarter. Neither team led by more than six the rest of the way.

With posts Schmidt and Schaetter on the bench with foul trouble most of the second half, Boerne built up leads, only to see Fredericksburg fight back. When both players returned midway through the fourth, Fredericksburg took momentum; a Schaetter basket tied the game at 48-48, but she missed the ensuing free throw that could have given her team the lead.

Schaetter fouled out with 2:09 remaining, sending Taylor to the line. Taylor, who made 10 of 13 free throws for the game, sank one to put Boerne ahead 49-48, but when Boerne tried to build the lead further, Biedermann stole the ball, then assisted Schmidt on a fast break; Schmidt’s layup put Fredericksburg ahead 50-49, their first lead since 34-33 in the third.

Then Schmidt fouled out with 1:50 remaining. Kazen, who made 5 of 6 free throws in the second half, made both free throws to put Boerne ahead 51-50.

To compensate for two starting posts fouling out, Fredericksburg used a full-court press. It did backfire once; Biedermann, who scored a game-high 19 points, fouled out with 52.8 seconds left. Katie Moore made the free throws, extending the lead to 53-50. But the Fred press also forced turnovers in the Boerne backcourt. Fredericksburg missed several layups attempting to capiltalize, but got a free throw and two-pointer from Ella Codiga to tie the game.

Which set up Torisk’s game winner.

The Boerne Greyhounds gave a great effort Thursday against the East Coast Dunkeroos from Australia, but fell short in their attempt to upset them Thursday at the Maverick Classic in Pearsall, TX.

Boerne sprinted out to a first half lead, but the Australian team used their patience and height in the second half to take over the game.

And what a great job of sportsmanship by both teams!
