Hey Tiger Fans,
First of all I apologize for not updating you the past couple of weeks; it has just been too busy here in downtown Brackettville. Everything has just been so hectic from homecoming, right down to playoff games. I’ll try and make up for it by recapping these past few weeks for you. And secondly I am very sorry to say all fall sports have come to an end out here in Tiger country.
Back to the good stuff- The Tigerette volleyball team came out district champs! When it came down to it, at the end of district, the ladies really stepped up and played the way that everyone was waiting for. First they defeated La Pryor, then the next BIG game was Sabinal- and of course it was a good one- with the Tigerettes coming out with the win. Then to cap off the perfect ending to district, they defeated; Charlotte, Comstock, and D’Hanis to grasp the District Championship title. Because the Tigerettes were district champions they received a bye for the first round of playoffs and played their first playoff game on November 5th. Unfortunately, the Tigerettes just didn’t have the edge that they needed to come off with a win. The ladies lost in a very close match that went to five sets. The girls improved so much throughout the season- they ended up being a great team. Everyone is so proud of them and look forward to seeing what next year brings.

Bun dun a naa! (drum roll) Now it is time for the 2009 BRACKETT CROSS COUNTRY TEAM! Firstly I would just like to say WOW! These guys and gals are amazing- so much fun to be around, and I love being on their team. The Brackett runners show more persistence, determination, hard work, and unity than anyone around- and they were rewarded for that. The guys cross country had a great season, in which they ran amazing all the way through the District meet. The Varsity boys had one member of the team to advance on to Regionals, and that was Joelson. The remaining Varsity members were; Victor (our sole senior), Jaime, Adrian, Victor, Bradley, and Grant.

The girls team advanced to the state meet for the third consecutive year- and man, we are grateful to be able to say that. They were the district runner-ups following Mason. The Tigerettes overcame that roadblock and defeated Mason at the Regional meet for the second year in a row, but did not yet have what it took to defeat the strong team of Zavala. Not until state that is…

At state, the Brackett team was the top finisher for Region 4 1A. The state qualifying team consisted of six juniors and one freshman; Bianca, Sahara, Haley, Erica, Marissa, Chey, and myself. The remaining runners that ran at the District meet, and were close behind were; Icela, Mercedes, and Sariah. Now I think I can safely say that all these girls and boys had a very successful year, and many are already lookin’ forward to the next.

Don’t worry I didn’t forget our Brackett Tiger Football team! Man was this an intense season. The Tigers had their ups and downs, but really came out as a good bunch of football players. The boys were 3-2 in District with wins against Center Point, Medina (Homecoming), and Nueces Canyon. It all came down to the last District game against Sabinal, this game decided who would be taking the ride into the playoffs. Sabinal was ready to defeat Brackett going into this game, and played a strong first half. At one point the Jackets were two touchdowns ahead. The teams went into half time with Brackett trailing by one touchdown. But our guys had a turnaround in the second half and held Sabinal to a scoreless second half- Brackett came out with the victory and the spot in the playoffs. WOOOHOO! The first round playoff game was against Junction, the game was hard fought but Brackett just didn’t prevail. The guys had a great season and we all enjoyed watching. The senior boys were Raul, Jeff, Shaun, Cody, Ramon, Isaac, Danny, and Lawrence. The other boys contributed so much to the team and we believe they will do great things next season. I know I loved watching them play and wish them the best in the sports to come. GO TIGERS AND TIGERETTES!

Great job, fall sports - and good luck Basketball!
I would like to make a special note about the La Pryor Bulldogs-
CONGRATS on making it as far as you did guys, y’all showed some real talent. I know the game against Ganado was close, but you sure made them play hard for it! Next year y’all will be a serious threat. CONGRATS!
Also good job to the seven from our local area on making it to the State XC meet!

There’s nothing like Saturday night football in D’Hanis, Texas. It’s a South Texas tradition, with fans from all over the area showing up.

And last night it was the D’Hanis Cowboys fans doing the most cheering, taking care of the Brackett Tigers 36-12.

And the band played on….

The Brackett Tigers and Tigerettes are workin’ hard down in Tiger country. All the teams are having a great success rate. But here’s the low-down on each team.
The Tigerette volleyball team is currently 3-1 in district. These girls have improved very much since the beginning of the season. I cannot count the numerous times that I have heard “WOW I didn’t know she was that good!” These girls defeated La Pryor, Comstock, and Charlotte. They played very good and came out with the wins. But on October 3 they had a very close match with the Sabinal Yellow Jackets. The match was definitely a good one, going into five games, each one ending with the opposite team just a few points behind. The girls are really looking like a team, and have a common goal in mind, and that is to be district champs. Currently they are tied for 1st with three other teams. Their next match is Saturday in D’Hanis.
“We have been playing well so far but we are going to play even better for the rest of our district season. We have a tough game ahead, and I know we will work hard, and do our best. We are the returning District Champs, and we would like to get that title again,” Cheyenne B.

Now for the CROSS COUNTRY team. I can tell you that I have seen first hand how hard these guys and gals are working. Each week they are adding more miles on those shoes. The team has run in a few races since I’ve last updated you - and let me add they did an AWESOME job.

They ran on the Regional course in the Ricardo Romo UTSA Invitational. The girls placed second as a team fairly close behind Guthrie.

The teams also ran in Nueces Canyon on September 26 - the girls team dominated with runners in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th, all receiving medals. The guys were short a runner but gave the other teams some good competition. We had a varsity boy in the top three and several others close behind. The team will next be competing in the Del Rio Invitational on October 11.

Inspirational Quote of the Week!
“This is my second year running on the Cross Country team. I get the privilege of running with this amazing, beautiful bunch of girls, and TOGETHER we are working hard to make it back to the state meet this year. Everyone on the team has been given the talent and ability to be great runners, and we thank God for that! I would like to say that is has truly been an honor running with this team and having a great coach. (We love you coach Brotherton) I love our team and I know that TOGETHER, no matter what it takes we will work towards that state title. WE CAN DO IT!” Sahara R.

Last but not least - the Brackett Tiger football team. The guys are currently undefeated in district. They have definitely made a mark on their last two district opponents, first defeating the Leakey Eagles in a 40-6 win. Their other win was against the Center Point Pirates, the guys pulled out an outstanding win with a score of 42-7. The Tigers have a definite goal in mind, and that is to be District Champs. This goal is very apparent in what Shaun had to say:

“Right now we are working to become the returning District Champs. Our first steps were Leakey and Center Point, which we got down without many problems. The next step will be defeating D’Hanis, this game will be tough, and one of the most important games to win for the title. I know that our team will work very hard this week and the weeks to come in order to overcome the toughest opponents, and push on toward our goal.” – Shaun

Last year the Tigers tied for first with the title of Tri-District Champs, but I don’t believe that the Tigers are willing to share this year. They are working on coming out with the title all for themselves. Good Luck to the Tigers on their game Saturday in D’Hanis against the Cowboys.
Thanks Pam Hale for XC Pics, and Thanks Cash Letsinger for Football Pics!

Hey! I am back for round two. I hope you enjoyed my first article here on SAsports.com. It is my sincere regret to inform you that the school year is here. Ugh, I know! But on the upside the mighty Brackett Tigerettes and Tigers are getting in the sports “zone”. They have finally begun “the real thing” and are into the 2009-2010 sports season.
I’ll begin telling you about my personal favorite - the cross country team!! We are all excited about this season because we have no idea how it will turn out, but our expectations are high. Our first meet was September 3rd, in Uvalde - on a Thursday! The team placed fifth. With fierce competition and being short two runners, we did pretty well. The super-duper girl’s team consists of Erica, Haley, Myself, Cheyenne, Icela, Bianca, Sahara Rodriguez, Marissa, Sariah, and Mercedes. We are all looking forward to this challenging yet engaging year - full of laughs and hopefully gold medals. The girls fortitude really shows right now in practice. Here are a few words from my fellow teammate Haley Hale about the season we have ahead of us:
“We are a very close and determined team (speaking for both boys and girls), which will hopefully bring us both the District and Regional Championship titles, and taking us back to state for the 3rd consecutive year”.
Their next race is in Medina Valley on the 12th.
The Brackett volleyball girls are getting into the flow of things and are looking better and better. Every pass is more on target, every set is closer to the zone, and each hit looks harder and harder. The girls defeated Dilley on Aug 28th and had a close match with Del Rio going four games, but fell a little short of victory. They also participated in the Cole tournament in San Antonio on the 5th. One of the girls Paige Nowlin said, “We are going through some rough patches but we are working those out as we go. We’ll get through them and come out as a great team.” Their next game is on September 8th against Carrizo Springs. We all want them to have the best of luck, and show their competition what they are made of.
Now for the football team - They are looking bigger and stronger. The boys are just waiting for their time to shine, and are looking forward to the season they have ahead of them. Ayland Letsinger, in particular, is ready for this season. Here is what he had to say about it, “Our team as a whole clicks very well. Each member is focused on winning that district title and winning our first playoff game in years, and we won’t let up until it happens.”
The Tigers played both their scrimmages - the first against Falls City and the second was here in Brackett against Ozona. The Tiger’s first game was in Dilley on August 28 but was cancelled due to the lightning and rain. (Yes I said rain - in Southwest Texas.) The guys played a good game against Harper on Friday September 4th here on their home field. The game definitely had its high points. We scored the first touchdown early in the first quarter and after some confusion, Harper had the next touchdown. At the end of the half the score was 7-14, Harper with the lead. The Tigers received another six points in the third, but it wasn’t quite enough to defeat the Longhorns. But we all look forward to watching them play at home again against the Rocksprings Angoras on the 11th.

First of all, I think it is so cool that I get to write for SAsports.com, and I would like to start off by saying thanks for reading my column. Through out the sports seasons, I am going to try to keep everyone posted as much as possible… - here’s my first shot.
Can you believe summer is almost over? No more relaxing, off-season training, or sleeping in late; it’s back to the books and sports. Two-a-days are now underway, and seem to be going at a pretty productive pace.

The football team has a pretty good turnout as usual. They started bright and early this past Monday. The guys will have some experience out there on the field; eight of the starters are returning from last year’s varsity team. We are expecting a good season out of them.

Their first scrimmage is Saturday August 15 in Falls City. Then on the 20th they have a scrimmage on their home field against Ozona.

The band and the cheerleaders have just started working on their Tiger and Tigerette Spirit. I have spoken to several of the band members and I know that they are hyped up about this year. I can tell that they will keep the crowd pumped.

Now for the ladies, the volleyball team has a lot of fresh new faces. This year’s team is completely different from last year, but the potential of these girls is obvious. They are in for a great year once they get familiar with each of their new teammate’s skills.

They participated in their first scrimmages on the seventh and eighth and they did very well, especially considering how new they are to each other.

And, last but I can say definitely not the least is the CROSS COUNTRY team. They started putting on mileage as a team on August 3.

They are defending Regional Champs so they have big shoes to fill this year. To be as good or better as last year is going to take a lot of hard work. As of right now, the girls varsity team is composed of all incoming juniors. Way to go class of ‘11!

There are three new freshman girls that will be pushing for a spot, and if they work at it they definitely will be contenders. The boy’s team is looking mighty good; I am looking forward to seeing them compete this coming September.

And I can’t forget the coaches… they are doing a great job getting all of us in shape and back into our routines. They are out there when we are, making sure everything is done right.
The Pre-competition addition
Ok I thought I would do something different, to get people more people involved. This is called Pre-competition addition. This is where I would like to here about any odd routines, superstitions, habits that you do or wear for a game or race. I have heard of people that wear the same socks or eat the same pre-game meal the night before a game or race. For example, Michael Jordan wore his blue University of North Carolina shorts under his uniform. So don’t be shy - I know some of you out there have some ‘perty’ wild routines and I would like you to share. Leave yours in the comment box; you can leave your name or asked to be anonymous. Thanks!
And thanks for readin’!
Yours truly,
Kelsey Bruce

You’ve known her as one of the top 1A cross country runners in the state. Now, she’s our new Brackett High School student columnist.
Kelsey Bruce, the multi-sport student-athlete from Brackettville, is now our official student columnist for the Tigers/Tigerettes. She replaces Bianca Martinez, who did a great job covering all things at Brackett High School over the past few years.
We look forward to reading all of the positive things that are happening in Brackettville, Texas. And thanks to Kelsey, we have the football and volleyball schedules posted as well!

Here’s some of the Area 1A Track Meet from Thursday April 16 - in pictures.

Runners from Thorndale, Brackett, Louise, Snook, Stacey, and Mason give it their all.

Medina HS knows a thing or two about pole vaulting.

… and the long jump.

Mason is back and competing in the pole vault.

If it’s postseason time, you can bet that Thorndale girls will be competing.

This has been a great year for the Louise HS relay team.

Mason and Rocksprings runners battle for first place.

Brackett vs. Mason…
