A new year, a new decade, and another boys basketball game that went down to the wire on Monday night.

The TMI Panthers, led by 14 points each from Sean Myers and Andrew Lane, defeated the D’Hanis Cowboys 55-54 in overtime.

It’s been a tough week in SAsports.com land; we lost a very dear friend over the weekend.

Cassandra Santos, a 2009 graduate of D’Hanis High School, passed away last Friday in a car accident coming home from a friend’s house. This Senior Editor remembers her well, having announced several of her basketball games, and DJing two of her proms.
Coach Todd Craft, the D’Hanis community, and most importantly, the Santos family, could use your prayers. I know it will take a lot of time to help this small town cope and heal from this terrible loss.

One of the biggest rivalries west of San Antonio has to be when D’Hanis and Sabinal get together - in ANY sport.

And while these two battles for a playoff spot in football Saturday night, it was the Cowboys getting the win over Sabinal 29-26, thanks to a game-saving interception.

Even Lauren Rios, our SAsports.com Sabinal student writer, was there!

There’s nothing like Saturday night football in D’Hanis, Texas. It’s a South Texas tradition, with fans from all over the area showing up.

And last night it was the D’Hanis Cowboys fans doing the most cheering, taking care of the Brackett Tigers 36-12.

And the band played on….

The D’Hanis Cowgirls, always a strong force in 1A volleyball, added some local flavor to their coaching staff this past week.
Athletic Director Todd Craft announced the hiring of Courtney Rodriguez as their new head volleyball coach. Rodriguez is a Tarleton State University graduate, and was at Stockdale HS this past year as an assistant.
In addition, Coach Rodriguez is a Hondo High School graduate and her husband graduated from D’Hanis, so she is definitely familiar with the area.

Today, SAsports.com will be out at D’Hanis High School for a Basketball Tour Stop, announcing and playing the music for a girls/boys doubleheader versus Crystal City.
It will be the first time announcing for the Cowboys and Cowgirls since the Regional Basketball Tourney last February and March, and the first game Tour Stop in D’Hanis since 2005, when we announced for an exciting five-set volleyball thriller, in which the Cowgirls defeated Brackett for the district title.
Above is a photo from November, when D’Hanis guard Meagan Barlow signed a national letter of intent with Texas A&M-Kingsville. Below is the press release from the signing last month:
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Meagan Barlow, a 5-7 guard out of D’Hanis High School, signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday.
Barlow, a two-time TABC All-State guard, averaged 18.6 points, 7.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game as a junior. In the regional semi-finals, she scored 25 points and had 10 assists against Calvert. She earned the District Most Valuable Player, San Antonio Express News All-Area, TABC All-Region, Texas Basketball Magazine All-State and Texas Preps Magazine All-State honors.
During her sophomore season, Barlow averaged 17.3 points, 5.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. She was named the district offensive most valuable player, San Antonio Express News Area Most Valuable Player and TABC All-Region in addition to her TABC All-State honor. She poured in 32 points against Calvert in the Regional semi-finals.
As a freshman, Barlow earned honorable mention All-District honors.
A multi-sport athlete, Barlow has earned first team all-district honors in volleyball and softball and was a regional qualifier in track. She was the District co-Most Valuable Player as a junior in softball and District Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore in volleyball.
Barlow plans to study Health and Kinesiology at A&M-Kingsville. She is the only player that Javelina Head Coach Scott Hyland plans to sign in the early signing period.
