SAsports.com brought its Volleyball Tour Stop to Harlandale high School on Tuesday Night, as the Floresville Jaguars looked to even up their 29-4A district record at 2-2.

But the Harlandale volleyball team, led by Dishai Goodwyn’s 12 kills, defeated Floresville 25-8, 25-14, 25-15 to remain undefeated in district play along with Uvalde. And Goodwyn was also celebrating her birthday last night.

Volleyball: Navarro rallies against Floresville

Posted by Mark Kusenberger on August 12, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Panthers lose first set, rally to win match

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Staff Writer

A shorthanded Navarro Panther team overcame a first set loss to defeat the Floresville Jaguars 16-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 Tuesday afternoon in Floresville.

Navarro, #2 in the SASports.com 2A poll, overcame the loss of senior Hannah Bonds, who was a late scratch due to illness. The Panthers appeared to be adjusting to her absence in the first set. Floresville took advantage by building a 17-4 lead; the Jaguars scored on 7 consecutive services by Vanessa Orzabal in building their lead on their way to a 25-16 set victory.

After the 17-4 deficit, however, the Panthers took control. Although their rally fell short in the first set, closing on a 12-8 run foreshadowed the rest of the match. Winning 4 straight services by Stephanie Moeller sent the Panthers to a 7-3 lead in the second set. When Sydawnie Douglas scored three of her services, including two aces, Navarro built an 11-5 lead, from which they would coast to victory. Noelle Kubenka provided several kills during the set, and Moeller won four consecutive serves to close the set, a 25-14 win which evened the match at 1 set apiece.

The third set was the best contested of the match. Floresville built a 14-9 lead, which Navarro chipped away at, closing to 18-17 without having won consecutive serves to that point in the set. And with the score Floresville 19, Navarro 17, Floresville made a critical mistake. After an ace appeared to increase the Jaguars lead to 20-17, Floresville was ruled to have used their libero to serve from the 3rd and 6th spot in their rotation. The illegal rotation forced Floresville to forfeit the point to Navarro, making the score Floresville 19 Navarro 18. Haley Frangen then won two serves, first with an ace and then with a kill by Douglas, to put Navarro ahead 20-19. Although Floresville would tie the game at 20, they would never again lead. Another Douglas kill clinched the set, giving Navarro a 25-22 win.

The final set was tied at 7-7 before Navarro broke Floresville’s serve, then scored on three straight serves from Casey Braun – the only junior on the team - to build a 11-7 lead. Braun began with consecutive aces. Sadie Bonds – Hannah’s sister and the only sophomore on the team – set up kills for Braun, Kubenka and Moeller in the match-clinching victory.

Sadie Bonds also celebrated her birthday the day of the match.

Think Powder Puff football isn’t tough? Ask Sarah and Bailey, who collided face-to-face on this play.

Or ask Stephanie, who blocked this kick with her face.

Think the Powder Puff cheerleaders can’t dance? ‘Nuff said…

Thanks so much to everyone involved in last night’s Floresville Powder-Puff doubleheader, to benefit Project Graduation. Since SAsports.com will be helping to host Floresville’s Project Graduation, we want EVERY senior to be there. So sign up today!

Here’s some of the other pictures from last night’s three-team extravaganza…

The Class of 2010 team - Victorious Secret!

The Class of 2009 team - Gridiron Girls!

And the other ‘09 team - School Yard Bullies!

Victorious Secret made it through their banner with no incidents.

Things didn’t go as smoothly for Gridiron Girls, as they ran over several of the banner holders.

She… could… go… all… the… way… and she did, for a 67 yard touchdown!

What a catch by Sarah Trevino - who just happens to be the SAsports.com student columnist.

She just mowed over people…

Yes, I was up to no good most of the night…

When all was finished (at 9:55pm), the Class of 2010 were the champions!

Many, many more pictures are available; go to the link at the top of the article to see those.

And thanks Floresville - I had a blast!

Jay Mustangs win SAsports.com Jaguar Classic Tournament

Posted by Jay Tope on December 6, 2008 at 10:52 pm

The John Jay Mustangs girls basketball team may still be young, but they are mature enough to step up to the plate in a big game.

And they delivered in a big way, winning the SAsports.com Jaguar Classic Championship over the defending champion Steele Knights Saturday afternoon at Floresville High School.

In their semifinal win over Frenship, the Mustangs prevailed despite missing a ton of shots. Against Steele, it was if they couldn’t miss. By the half, the score read Jay 40, Steele 9.

And It wasn’t just the Knight fans that were stunned.

“That might have been one of the best executed halves of girls basketball I’ve seen in a long time,” said one official at the tournament, who had admittedly come to the see the championship game to watch Steele’s Meighan Simmons play.

The key to the Mustangs’ win was the play by all five starters, which features three sophomores and two juniors.

Tournament MVP Erica Donovan was solid as a force in the paint, an outside threat, and even running the point at times. Point guard Julissa Garrett (All-Tournament) took advantage when the Mustangs spread the floor by driving into the lane for layups, tear-drops, and taking great care of the ball in general. Kiara Taylor was on fire from outside. Vanessa Orr was money inside, converting almost every pass sent her way inside off of a double team into two points. And Maretta Stubbs was everywhere needed - on the boards, grabbing every loose ball, and causing havoc defensively. She also scored the game’s first five points, starting the offensive wave that the Mustangs would ride into halftime.

And while everything was going right for the Mustangs, everything was going wrong for the Steele Knights. They became increasingly frustrated as the first half went along, opting for the outside shot - shots that weren’t falling.

But the tournament wasn’t without its bright spots for Steele. They looked very impressive against a Poth team that is looking better every week. Olivia Patterson had an incredible tournament, and was recognized for her efforts with All-Tourney status. McKenzie Adams is a solid post for the Knights, as is Shayla Vrana. Olivia Burns is stepping things up at her position.

Oh yeah - and Meighan Simmons is still the best overall player the city has ever seen.

In the third place game, the Frenship Tigers defeated Poth; East Central knocked off Calallen to take the Consolation Championship; Tivy upended Brackenridge as well on Saturday.

Other members of the All-Tournament team:
Krista Ford, Frenship
Kelsey Titzman, Poth
Melody Dominguez, Brackenridge
Cheyenne Berry, Lytle
Stephanie Erskine, Floresville
Kaitlyn Overby, Tivy
Monique Waiters, East Central

Most spirited: The Lytle Lady Pirates were cheering for everyone that played. They would help organize cheers for parents of other schools that were playing.

Dance Award: We had the music going all-tournament long, and this award could go to Del Rio, Frenship, Southwest, Lytle, Carrizo Springs, Southside, and several others.

Watch in the coming weeks for: Several teams that will make some noise in their districts. Southside only lost to 3rd place Frenship by two points. And Floresville beat Southside. These two are in 29-4A, and will be favorites in the district.

Watch in the coming weeks for: Burbank and Brackenridge. These 28-4A teams impressed everyone, and will battle for district supremacy.

Watch in the coming weeks for: Kerrville Tivy. They have one senior in Kaitlyn Overby. Kelsi Wilmot plays like a senior. And everyone else on the team can get hot at any given time. Remember, they took John Jay, the Tournament Champion, to overtime Friday night. And in 27-4A, you have Tivy, Steele, NB Canyon, Boerne Champion (lost to John Jay by single digits twice), Clemens (much improved over the past two years), Alamo Heights, Seguin - yeah, its a tough district. But Tivy will make the playoffs.

Sarah Trevino’s weekly Floresville High School column

Posted by Sarah Trevino on November 26, 2008 at 9:44 am

The past few weeks have been pretty eventful in Floresville. The Jaguar Hoop Troop took second place at the Uvalde tournament, and continue to play well. On Saturday they defeated Beeville and on Monday November 24th they defeated Canyon Lake. They are very impressive to watch and each of their games gets more and more exciting.

The Tiger basketball team has been playing very well also, and is scheduled to play Wednesday November 26th at Kerrville Tivy. Tomorrow marks the first day of our Thanksgiving holiday so head on up to Kerrville to watch the Tigers take on the Antlers. The freshman play at 10:30 along with the Junior varsity and Varsity plays at noon.

Next week, the Hoop Troop will host the annual SAsports.com Jaguar Classic with 24 teams attending. It is December 4-6 and will be a very full weekend of basketball and fun. Jay Tope will be there with announcing and contests so come out and attend one of the biggest tournaments in South Texas.

There will be no school from Wednesday November 26th through Friday November 28th due to the Thanksgiving holidays. I wish every one a very happy thanksgiving and safety in your travels! When we return, we only have three weeks left until winter break.

Sarah Trevino’s weekly Floresville High School column

Posted by Sarah Trevino on November 15, 2008 at 9:37 am

Last Friday, the Tigers fell to the Pleasanton Eagles. It was a hard fought game, but the Tigers came up short. They have been working very hard to prepare for the Bi-District playoff game versus Port Lavaca Calhoun. The Tigers lost to the Sandcrabs last year in this very same game, so I know that they will be going for the kill. The game will be played on Saturday November 15th at 7:00 pm in Victoria. I hope to see everyone there to cheer our Tigers on to victory.

Also on Friday the Hoop Troop had a scrimmage versus Brackenridge. They played hard, and the work they put into the preseason is obvious. They will be attending the Uvalde Tournament this Friday-Saturday. Good luck Jags!
