Ellis, Spencer, Harrak-Sharif lead Huskies to 60-53 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

In the first quarter, it was Kristopher Ellis.

In the second quarter, it was Rashid Harrak-Sharif.

In the second half, it was Bruce Spencer.

Throughout the ballgame, when the Holmes Huskies needed scoring, someone stepped up to provide; the result was a 60-53 victory over the Jay Mustangs Saturday morning at the Paul Taylor Field House.

Although the game was fast-paced, Jay could never create the transition game they love. Holmes (10-15, 4-8 in 28-5A) shut down Jay’s leading scorer Luis Serrano; Serrano came into the day averaging 13.7 points a game, but managed only two Saturday as the Huskies’ defense denied him the ball.

Jay’s Jose Colon picked up the slack with seven first quarter points, matching Ellis’s seven. Holmes failed to score the first three minutes of the game, but went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-6 lead. Robert Oliver’s field goal off an Isiah Flores assist tied the game at 13 late in the first.

The second quarter included five ties and one other lead change. Harrak-Sharif scored six points; his first basket gave Holmes a 15-13 early in the quarter, and his other two scores each tied the game. His third field goal made it 26-26, then free throws by Ellis gave Holmes a 28-26 lead going into the halftime locker room.

The third quarter was even more back-and-forth, with five tied and four other lead changes. Jay (12-14, 5-7 in 28-5A) had tied the game at 40 with free throws by Moses Menchaca, but then Holmes went on a 9-0 run, including four points from Spencer and a trey from Ryan Winkler. All of a sudden, someone had created some space, and Holmes led 49-40 when Jay coach Mike Simpson called a timeout with 7:02 left in the game.

After Spencer committed his fourth foul with 5:46 remaining, Jay went on a 7-0 run, ignited by a trey from Eddie Bellamy-Stephens. With the score Holmes 51, Jay 49, Holmes coach Chaun Brooks called a timeout with 4:30 remaining. Then he had to burn another timeout just four seconds later when Jay’s press nearly led to a five second violation in the Holmes backcourt.

But when Jay had a chance to tie with a two-pointer, Kevin Vogt stole the ball, and free throws from Spencer pushed the lead back to four at 55-51. A Colon score brought Jay within two at 55-53, but a deuce from Harrak-Sharif and free throws from Spencer and Jedadiah Williams would lock up the Husky victory.

Spencer scored all 13 of his points in the second half, shooting five of five from the free throw line.

Holmes kept their flickering playoff hopes alive, pulling within two games in the loss column of fourth-place Warren with five dates to go. The loss represented a missed opportunity for Jay; they had a chance to pull into a tie with Warren in the loss column had they won; instead, they are a game behind, and they must bypass Warren in the standings to advance because Warren has swept Jay.

Lady Mustangs score 53 in first half of 82-42 victory over Holmes

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

The Jay Lady Mustangs set a high gear in the first quarter, then went to a higher gear in the second on their way to an 82-42 victory over the Holmes Lady Huskies Saturday afternoon at the Paul Taylor Fieldhouse.

After outscoring Holmes 20-8 in the first quarter, Jay (27-4, 13-0 in 28-5A) outscored Holmes 33-13 in the second. Six different Mustangs scored at least six points in the first half, led by Erica Donovan. Donovan scored 12 points in the second quarter alone, finishing with 16 for the half. Jay went on an 18-0 run – including 10 points from Donovan - after Holmes’ Ashley Flores committed her second foul with 1:35 remaining in the first. The run built Jay’s lead to 33-8.

The Lady Mustangs used their transition game for easy baskets, and worked the perimeter for three pointers. When they missed a shot, Jay used their height advantage to dominate the boards. At 5’10, Flores is the only starter for Holmes listed at over 5’6; with Donovan, Vanessa Orr, and Maretta Stubbs, Jay started three players as tall or taller than Flores.

The only thing Jay couldn’t do was stop Kelley Moreno. The 5’3 freshman scored 25 points for Holmes, sinking four three-pointers and making seven of eight free throws. Whereas Jay had six players score six or more points in the first half, Moreno was the only Lady Husky to manage more than five points for the entire game.

Jay coach Mike Floyd pulled most of his starters with 6 minutes left in the third quarter and Jay leading 68-29. The mass substitutions created enough confusion that Jay had six players on the floor and was assessed a technical.

The Lady Mustangs are so deep that even when they go to the bench, they send promising talent to the floor. Freshman point guard Destiny Amezquita scored five fourth quarter points and finished with 13 for the game, second only to Donovan on the team; she also contributed four assists.

Jay clinched a share of the district title with the win over Holmes, and can earn the outright title with one more victory. Their remaining games are against a Brandeis team that’s out of the playoff picture, a Stevens team in fourth place, and a Marshall team that could force a tie for first if they win their last three while Jay loses their last three. Holmes is now 4-24 overall, 0-13 in 28-5A.

Jeremy Garcia’s Holmes Huskies student column

Posted by Jay Tope on September 7, 2009 at 5:31 am

HEY HUSKY FANS!

As we begin the third week of school, I have noticed changes that have already occurred this school year. New faces, new teachers, more spirit, and more dedication. Not only that, but Holmes High School is proud to be a Recogmized School! Last year, everyone worked hard to meet Mrs. Strong’s goals, our own goals, and most importantly BEAST ON THE TAKS! And boy did we beast on it!

As I mentioned, everybody is even more spirited this year! Friday night as our football team beat the Highland Owls, it showed. Despite the game almost getting cancelled, the Huskies showed a little rain wouldn’t hurt ‘em. The cheerleaders, Goldies, and the Rowdy Crew cheered their hearts out for the guys as the rain poured down. While the game was delayed, and everybody waited under the bleachers, the Rowdy Crew got everybody pumped up and excited! Student, parents, even teachers stayed to support the team and continue to rally on the Huskies. When the game continued the Huskies got back to business.

In the first quarter Edmundo Pineda scored, catching a 17 yard pass from Moses Rodriguez, and Matt Lopez converted the two point conversion. In the second quarter, the Huskies had a little trouble on the defensive side, but managed to score with a 10 yard run from Matt Lopez. When the Huskies came back from half time, They caged the Owls by only allowing one touchdown. The Huskies new offense proved to be effective in the third quarter as Matt Lopez scored on a 68 yard pass from Moses Rodriguez; soon after, Demon Jones scored on a 45 yard pass with Lopez converting yet again on the two point conversion.

In the Fourth quarter the Huskies continued to rally with Moses Rodriguez scoring on a 1 yard run and Tevin Parker scoring on a 2 yard run. The Huskies took the win, beating Highlands 44 to 27. Moses Rodriguez went 9 for 18 with three touchdowns and 221 yards. Tevin Parker rushed for 14 yards scoring once, and Matt Lopez rushed for 76 yards scoring once on a rushing touchdown and another from a pass. The Huskies look very strong this season, and will start district play on Friday (Sept. 11th) at Gus Stadium at 7:30pm against Taft.

The Lady Huskies Volleyball team also went through a change with new coach Melissa Thrailkill, who has coached the girls to a great start. The Lady Huskies won the consolation title at the Harlandale tournament, and won their district opener against Taft, defeating the Lady Raiders in five games. On Friday, the ladies suffered a tough loss to Brandeis, but are looking to bounce back up as they take on Stevens on Wednesday (Sept. 9th) at Paul Taylor Field House at 5:30pm.

Waking up at the break of dawn, running the streets around the community, running fence lines, or the movie theater hill is the normal routine for the Cross Country team. The runners had been working hard this summer with one goal in mind - for both girls and guys to win district as a team and go on to regionals. Coach Barlow has been pushing the Huskies to their limit, and getting the team ready for the most important race of the season, the District 28-5A race. Although the season has just started, the team is ready and eager than ever! This past weekend, the team was a bit disappointed because their first meet at Southwest High School was cancelled, but they still managed to run a race of their own on the infamous 3-mile loop. Both Varsity/JV girls and guys ran great, and look ready for the season. Their first official race will be on Saturday (Sept. 12th) at Brooks City Base. Girls varsity start at 8am, Boys varsity at 8:30. The Cross Country team is also selling shirts, so if anybody is looking to buy one look for Coach Barlow or let me know via email (jeremyg10@sbcglobal.net). Both Coach Barlow and I have the design; orders are due by Wednesday (Sept. 9th) and shirts cost $20.

I would like to thank the Sleighbelles for all their support. Good job ladies, you are awesome. Keep up the good work; we continue to look for your support and look forward to y’all performing. And the new ‘Rowdy Crew’, keep up the hype!

I have not had any updates on tennis and swimming; if you are a part of those teams, please let me know, so I can get you in the column.

If anybody has pictures, please feel free to email them to me at jeremyg10@sbcglobal.net so I can post them.

~HUSKY FIGHT NEVER DIES~

Jeremy Garcia’s Holmes Huskies student column

Posted by Jeremy Garcia on August 7, 2009 at 1:05 am

Welcome back, Husky fans!

As I begin to write this article for the 09-10 school year, I can’t believe I am entering my senior year, and I’m sure other seniors feel the same. It has been a long journey through high school, but let me remind you seniors – it is only the beginning. I know I’m anxious to return for my last year of high school.

As teachers prepare to get classes started, the fall sports are ready to kick off. Our football team, led by new head coach Hector Rodriguez, is out to show that this year’s team is for real. Moses Rodriguez, projected starting quarterback, will be leading the offensive this year after showing some impressive play last year. The Huskies will have 24 returning letterman, with Nykiren Wellington leading both the offensive and defensive lines. Holmes looks stronger this year, and we are all excited to see what the future has in store for them. The Huskies scrimmage Jefferson HS on August 21 at the Spring Sports Center at 6:30pm. More info will be posted, and the varsity football schedule is on this page.

The Lady Huskies volleyball team returns from an impressive summer league play. We would like to wish the best of luck to Coach Martinez at her new head coaching job with McCollum HS. Despite the loss of Coach Martinez, the Lady Huskies are playing hard and working well as a team. They will be ready for play August 11th at Wagner High School. And Holmes would like to welcome new head volleyball coach Melissa Thrailkill.

“We’re getting a lot done with the little time we have until our first game, but I feel she’s preparing us very well,” said senior Amy Abrigo.

SWIM TEAM!
First week of practice information (August 24-28):
Monday - Tuesday, room D222, team meeting: 7:30 - 8:30 AM
Wednesday - Friday, Aquatics Center for dry land: 6:00 - 7:30 AM
Stay in shape! You are expected to begin the season in physical condition.
Tryouts for the team take place September 3 based on the following:
90 push-ups in 2 minutes / 1 minute push-up hold
100 sit-ups in 2 minutes / 1 minute sit-up hold
10 x 50 kick on 1:00 / legal 200 IM
Boys: 1 mile run under 10 minutes
Girls: 1 mile in under 11 minutes

The spirit teams look to be bigger this year, so expect louder and even more Husky spirit to be shown. It looks as if the pep rallies will be very exciting this year, so be ready to show your Husky spirit, and more importantly… ”RAISEEEEE YOURRRR PAWSSSSSS!”

Locked out of District co-championship, Cougars defeats Holmes 8-2

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Staff Writer
www.TSRNsports.com

Carl O’Neal struck out 12 and Trey Doebbler and Braden Mattsen each homered as the Clark Cougars defeated the Holmes Huskies 8-2 Friday night at Inselmann Field.

After O’Connor had won 6-4 over Stevens at Northside Field #2 earlier in the day, Clark (18-8-1, 13-3 in 28-5A) had no chance to catch O’Connor in the standings to earn a co-district championship. With nothing on the line in terms of the standings, Clark coach Aldo Velasquez started Diego Hernandez, Tyler Reinagle, Jimmy Wells, and Patrick Fahy, who among them combined for 21 official at-bats through the first 25 games of the season. Hernandez had two hits, and Fahy reached three times on a single and two walks.

Holmes (3-22-1, 3-13 in 28-5A) was already locked into 8th place in the 9-team district before action began Friday.

O’Neal threw a staggering 141 pitches in going the distance on the mound for Clark. He gave up six hits and two runs – both earned – walking three and striking out 12. O’Neal, using his usual fastball and slider, struck out three batters each in the 5th and the 7th innings. O’Neal hung the Golden Sombrero on Chris Gonzales, striking him out four times.

Clark took a quick lead off losing pitcher Ryan Lawless (2-6). With one out, Jason Cervantes singled, and Mattsen walked him to second. Cervantes went to third on a Trey Doebbler fly ball to center, then Vince Salazar, with the runner going at first, singled through the area abandoned by the shortstop, scoring Cervantes; when the ball was bobbled in the outfield, Mattsen also scored to make it 2-0 Clark.

Doebbler’s three-run homer in the third put Clark ahead 5-1. Fahy drove in Hernandez with a base-loaded walked against the tiring Lawless in the 5th to make it 6-1, and Mattsen’s two run homer off Chris Gonzales extended the lead to 8-2.

Holmes scored single runs in the third and the sixth. Isaac Ramos hit a one-out opposite field singled to right, the Nick Campos followed with an opposite field single to left. Thomas Rivas hit a grounder to shortstop, but shortstop Cervantes’ throw to second to start the double play was dropped by the second baseman, allowing Ramos to score from second. O’Neal, naturally, struck out Gonzales and Lawless to end the inning. Holmes’ other run scored in the sixth when Isaac Ramos hit to a force play to drive in Adrian Arevalos.
Clark will play their first round playoff series against the loser of the South San-Victoria Memorial game, which will be played to break the tie for second place in 27-5A. The game will be played Saturday afternoon in Pleasanton.
