Cavs boys basketball heads to state with 38-31 win over Tivy
by Mark Kusenberger

After the Class 4A Region Champion Game at Littleton Gym Saturday afternoon, one of the Lake Travis fathers was overheard to say, “So you still think we’re a football school?”
Well, in a sense, yes. The Lake Travis side seemed a bit subdued, and since they last lost a football game, Lake Travis has won three state championships and lost two head football coaches.
So yes, Lake Travis is still a football school. But they are surely more now, after a 38-31 victory over Kerrville Tivy sent them to the state tournament.
David Eads led the way with 19 points, 14 in the first half.
Although the Antlers never led, they stayed true to their supporters’ chant “Tivy Fight Never Dies!” The game was tied at four and fourteen. And Tivy was within two with 6:37 left in the game.
But each time, Lake Travis (32-4) had a response. With the game tied a fourteen, Lake Travis’ David Eads went on a 10-0 run to make it 24-14. Yes, Eads scored all 10 points of the run. The highlight was the shot that made it 20-14, where Eads faked to his left so well that his defender fell down trying to reverse his direction while Eads made a wide-open look from the corner of the lane.
Tivy (29-6) answered with a 9-1 run to pull back within two about halfway through the third quarter at 25-23. Again, the Cavaliers answered, this time with an 8-0 to build the lead back up to ten at 33-23 with 27.5 seconds left in the third.
The Antlers had one last response – an 8-0 run of their own to come back to within two at 33-31. Jonathan Perry scored the last five of the run to start the fourth quarter.
Then Lake Travis coach Jan Jernberg called timeout with 6:37 left in the game. Whatever he said worked, because the Cavaliers shut out the Antlers the rest of the ballgame.
Tivy kept it interesting by limiting Lake Travis to five points the rest of the game. Over a near five-minute span, the only point was a free throw by Lake Travis’s Zach Karczewski. Tivy lost a chance to tie the game at 33 when a no-look pass went out of bounds, and all the shooters went cold from the floor the rest of the game. Perry, Tivy’s All-Region leader, after scoring the quarter’s first five points to close the gap, could not convert from the field the rest of the way. Cole Vucurevich’s layup – assisted by Eads after a 90-second possession – and two free throws by Billy Sherakas with 46.2 seconds left finally put the game away.
Lake Travis will play in the state tournament Thursday night at either 7 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Their likely opponent appears to be Lancaster, with Houston Yates and Lewisville the Colony to meet in the other semifinal.
So yes, Lake Travis is now a boys basketball school.
But doesn’t 38-31 look like the score of a football game?

State Ranked Antlers overcome Boerne Champion 44-41
by Mark Kusenberger

Number 7 in the state or not, Kerrville Tivy had to be expecting a battle when the played their archrival Boerne Champion Chargers on the road. After all, it’s also a hard-fought contest when these teams face each other, and the Chargers had won nine straight going into Saturday’s matchup.
And it was a battle, as the Chargers led by as many as seven points, and retook the lead 40-39 with about three minutes remaining.
But Tyler Kotson scored five of Tivy’s last six points in helping the Antlers to a 44-41 victory at Boerne Champion Saturday afternoon in the District 27-4A opener for both teams.
Kotson fnished with five points in the fourth quarter and ten for the game. Calallen transfer Deron Belford led the Antlers with 13 points, and All-Area player Jonathan Perry added 11.
Boerne Champion (15-7, 0-1 in 27-4A) went the locker room with a 22-16 lead after a stellar team performance. Madison Turner scored nine points to lead the Chargers, and at the half Perry and Kotson each had two points and two fouls.
But Tivy (16-4, 1-0 in 27-4A) responded as a veteran, state-ranked team would be expected to. After a 5-0 run built the Boerne Champion lead to 27-20, Tivy began chipping away at the deficit. Although the Antlers never took the lead, a pair of three-pointers by Belford sandwiched around free throws by the Chargers’ James Rogers tied the game at 32 going into the fourth.
After a Turner basket gave Boerne Champion back the lead, a Perry trey put Tivy in front 35-34, the Antlers’ first lead since 4-3. The game was tied three more times in the fourth quarter. After a Perry free throw put Tivy ahead 38-37, Marshall Kelley converted two free throws to put the Chargers in front 39-38. It would be their last lead.
Kotson followed with two free throws to put Tivy ahead for good at 40-39 with 2:24 remaining. On Boerne Champion’s next possession, the Antlers produced a stop with a Perry rebound, then extended their lead when Perry found Kotson for an easy bucket, building the lead to 42-39 with 51.3 seconds left. After Turner missed the front end of a one-and-one, Belford hit one of two free throws to put the Antlers ahead 43-39 with 35.4 seconds remaining.
Turner, given another opportunity, made a pair of free shots to with 26 seconds left to cut the deficit to 43-41; Turner finished with a game-high 14 points. Kotson responded by hitting one of two free throws with 19.5 seconds remaining, keeping the door open for Boerne Champion at 44-41.
A tenacious Tivy defense then limited the Chargers to an NBA length three-point attempt from Turner. The shot glanced off the right side of the rim, and while players scrambled on the floor for the loose ball, the buzzer sounded, sending Tivy to victory.
KERRVILLE TIVY SCORING: Deron Belford 13, Jonathan Perry 11, Tyler Kotson 10, Taylor Finley 8, Riley Miller, Bobby Schreiner, Kelby Martin, Joseph Troila, Tyler Thompson
BOERNE CHAMPION SCORING: Madison Turner 14, James Rogers 9, Connor Czar 6, David Rogers 5, Marshal Kelley 5, Trevor Eckard 1, Dallas Quick 1, Trey Moczygemba

What a game it was; Kerrville Tivy had some chances, but fell to Brenham 31-21 on Saturday in the 4A state football semifinals in Georgetown. It was a great year for the Antlers from Tivy High School, and all should be very proud of the performance put on by these young men.

This game promised to be an offensive showdown, with Kerrville Tivy’s Johnny Manziel…

… and Medina Valley’s Troy Stein. But the game got crazy in the second half, when after falling behind 45-10, Medina Valley scored and recovered three straight onside kickoffs, giving Tivy a scare befire falling to the Antlers 45-31.

This just in: that Manziel kid from Kerrville? He’s pretty good.
Manziel who returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Tivy’s contest against Wagner two weeks ago, was 14 of 20 passing for 226 yards. Manziel also carried the ball 20 times for 147 yards and all four Antler touchdowns en route to Tivy’s 28-13 win over previously undefeated Boerne Champion.
After the Antlers stalled on their first offensive possession of the game, the Chargers would get on the scoreboard at 9:17 of the first quarter. James Hurd wrapped up a three play, 75 yard touchdown drive by carrying the ball into the end zone from 13 yards out. Two minutes and two seconds later, the curtain was raised for the Johnny Manziel show. His first of four touchdowns capped a six play, 70 yard drive with Manziel scoring from 16 yards out. The extra point failed, and the Chargers held on to a 7-6 lead. Following a controlled Champion drive, the Antlers would again call on number 3 to find the end zone from 3 yards out. Sonny Guzzardo would cross the goal line for the two point conversion, and with 58 seconds left in the first quarter, Tivy took the lead at 14-7 and never looked back.
Manziel’s flair for the dramatic was not done yet. “Johnny Dangerously” stepped up into the pocket on a third and five play, and dashed 49 yards to the end zone at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter. The extra point increased the Tivy lead to 21-7. The Antler defense continued their solid play, highlighted by Tivy’s Tyler Meyer and Chase Rothermel stopping Champion’s leading rusher Brent Sutherland for a loss. Following a Daniel Mohnke interception on the very next play at 6:48 of the second, the Antler offense engineered their fourth scoring drive of the evening - a 7 play 58 yard drive that ended with Manziel scoring from 3 yards out to increase the Antler lead to 28-7.
The Charger offense would put together a 5 play, 30 yard drive with the clock winding down in the second quarter. Kyle Bullard booted a 25 yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the first half to cut the Champion deficit to 18 heading into the locker room. Bullard would again be successful from 26 yards out with 5:44 left in the third quarter to close out the scoring at Tivy 28 - Champion 13. Both teams struggled offensively in the second half, and untimely penalties thwarted both Champion and Tivy drives. Tivy’s defense led by Tyler Meyer, Spencer Thomas, Brian Spencer, Elijah Godley, Chase Rothermel, and sophomore Ferris Owens stole the spotlight in the second half with their timely stops to the Champion offense to cool the Charger momentum.
“It’s awesome to come out here and get the first win in district; it feels really good,” a tired but elated Manziel said afterwards.

In high school football, never take things for granted…

… because what you think is yours…

… can be taken away in a heartbeat. And with that, the Wagner Thunderbirds broke out of a 7-7 tie to defeat Kerrville Tivy 35-20 Friday night at Rutledge Stadium.
