On May 30th at 8 o’clock in the evening, the Rocksprings High School class of 2008 will graduate at Angora Stadium.

This year’s valedictorian is Zach Hernandez and salutatorian is Kelsey Wilson. Zachary Robert Hernandez is the son of Robert and Tina Hernandez. All throughout his high school years, Zach has participated in many activities.

Zach has been a member of the varsity football team for four years. He has been chosen as 1st team all district each year. His senior year he was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All State Team.

Zach has also been a member of the varsity basketball and baseball team for four years. He has been selected 1st team all district in basketball since his sophomore year and has been on the all academic team every year. In baseball, Zach has been 1st team all district first baseman since his junior year. As a senior, he also received the honor of Academic All State in basketball and baseball.

Zach was on the golf and track team all four years. He was a regional qualifier in golf his junior and senior year and was a fourth place medalist at regional his senior year. Zach also excelled in track where he was an area qualifier in the shot and discus his senior year.

Zach was inducted into the National Honor Society his sophomore year. He is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and was recently named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.

Zach has also had the privilege of participating on the UIL team where he has advanced to regionals since his freshman year. He has competed in editorial writing, number sense, calculator, and computer applications. In computer applications, he was a state qualifier for three straight years and was district and regional champion his senior year. Zach was named Mr. RHS and Most Likely to Succeed this year. He plans on attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Civil Engineering.

Salutatorian Kelsey Wilson is the daughter of Todd and Mary Wilson, and has one older brother, Brandon.

Very active in her high school career, Kelsey participated in cross country, band, cheerleading, basketball, power lifting, track, golf, one act play (OAP) and UIL academics. She has been a member of the student council all four years, and NHS for three, serving as the secretary this year.
In cheerleading she made all star cheerleader all four years in high school at cheerleading camp, and was named RHS head cheerleader her senior year.

Kelsey’s success also extended to the athletic field. In cross country, she was a regional qualifier her freshman year. She participated in varsity basketball and was named Academic All District all four years, serving as the team captain and 1st team All District three of the four years. Her junior year she was named District and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All Region. As team co-captain,

Kelsey helped lead the Lady Angoras past district play for three years. (The teams were district runners-up in 05-06, District and Area Champion in 06-07 and Bi-District champions in 07-08.) Power lifting was a sport that she waited until her senior year to try. Not only did she enjoy it, but she earned a 2nd place medal at the State Meet.

Despite her success in basketball and cross country, it was in track that Kelsey excelled the most. She was a Regional Qualifier in the 100 meter hurdles one year, 400 meter relay one year, 800 meter relay three years, 300 meter hurdles all four years, 1600 relay three years, and pole vault three years. Through her hard work and determination, she advanced to the Regional finals in all events, except for the 100 meter hurdles and mile relay one year. Kelsey had a lot of success at Regionals, as she was the bronze medalist in the 300 meter hurdles two years, and also in pole vault one year. She was also the Regional gold medalist in the pole vault two years, and went on to earn the silver medal at State her sophomore year, and was the State Champion her senior year. She has been named to the TGCA 07-08 All Star Track, All State Team, and All State Academic Track teams.

Public speaking is another talent that Kelsey polished through academic extracurricular activities, which helped her earn several All Star Cast awards in the three year that she participated in OAP. Both plays in which Kelsey had leading roles advanced past District - to Regionals her sophomore year, and to Area her junior year, where she received the Best Actress Award. In addition, she advanced to Regional Competition in Oral Interpretation all four years, having earned District Champion honors in the Prose division of Oral Interpretation three years, and finishing as District Runner-Up once.

Her 4-H activities involved showing market hogs where she received the Grand Champion awards with
her Hampshire barrow her junior year, and her cross guilt this year.

Kelsey was selected as band sweetheart her freshman year. She was also the Homecoming Queen, Angora Pride, Prom Queen, and just recently named Miss RHS by the RHS faculty.

Kelsey is also a member of the Catholic Church choir, and helps the First Baptist Church with their youth program as time permits.

Kelsey plans to work at Camp Eagle this summer as a lifeguard, following which she will continue her education in the fall at South Plains College in Levelland, where she has earned a track scholarship. She will pursue her dream of becoming a neonatal nurse.

Kelsey would like to offer her thanks to the RHS faculty, her friends, community support, and family for all their support during her memorable and successful four years at RHS.
