Hey Raider Fans!
Long time no see!! I’ve had some major computer problems at my house, which has kept me from updating the Taft sports blog. Sorry for the long absence....
Can you believe summer vacation is almost here? That’s wild!! The Senior Prom is just around the corner on May 3rd, and our seniors will soon be graduating June 12, 2008 at 1pm at the Alamodome. Gosh... it seems like yesterday when the class of 2 double Oh 9 were incoming freshmen, and now they will lead Taft as the new seniors!
Speaking of seniors… I had the great opportunity to meet and visit with a fellow athlete, Allie Gutierrez. Allie is a senior softball player at Taft and is making her first steps toward playing softball at the next level. On April 11, 2008 at 8:30a.m. Allie signed with the University of Arkansas/Pine Bluff to play softball on a full ride athletic scholarship. Now how neat is that? With her parents and family at her side, Allie signed her letter of intent and her emotions could not be held back any longer. As her tears rolled down her face, she shared a hug with her parents and family. Allie says her parents have always been her support system throughout her softball career.
"They have always pushed me to work as hard as I can and have molded me into the student athlete I am today.”
Gutierrez has been playing softball since the age of 8. With year round softball, Allie’s game continued to improve every year. Her hard work paid off and she was placed on the varsity softball squad in her freshman year at Taft.
"I figured I was doing something right and I wanted to keep going!” she stated.
Dreams of playing collegiate level softball were now becoming closer to a reality. Allie says her sisters were her biggest influence of her game.
”I wanted the skills and talents they had; I saw them as the ideal athletes.”
I had the opportunity to ask Allie some fun questions; here are her responses:
If you could meet any anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Babe Ruth because he is the greatest baseball legend.
If I won the lottery I would.... take my family on a huge vacation since we have never actually been on one due to year round softball.
At home my least favorite chore is....washing dishes.
On a typical summer day, I like to....play softball, hangout with my close friends and sleep.
My dream vacation would be.....to go to Hawaii.
My favorite movie is....A League of Their Own.
