The Marshall Rams and Taft Raiders battled at Farris Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

And both defenses took care of business, as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie thanks to goalkeepers Justin Cordova and Thomas Williams. Marshall is now 0-2-2 in District 28-5A play; Taft’s district record is 1-0-3.

The Boerne Greyhounds gave a great effort Thursday against the East Coast Dunkeroos from Australia, but fell short in their attempt to upset them Thursday at the Maverick Classic in Pearsall, TX.

Boerne sprinted out to a first half lead, but the Australian team used their patience and height in the second half to take over the game.

And what a great job of sportsmanship by both teams!

Paige Grandjean scores 17 second-half points in comeback victory

After a cold-shooting first half, Paige Grandjean scored 17 points in the second half, including 5 three-pointers, to lead the Boerne Champion Chargers to a 51-38 comeback victory over the Kerrville Tivy Lady Antlers.

After trailing 13-25 at the half, the Chargers outscored Tivy 17-7 in third to pull within 2, then outscored Tivy 21-6 in the fourth to close the deal. Champion’s second half rally included 8-0 and 11-0 runs.

Tivy (13-9, 1-2 in 27-4A) led 14-4 after one quarter, closing the period with an 8-0 run. Kaitlyn Overby scored 6 in the first, then added 6 more in the second, accepting passes in the low block for easy layups and getting second chance points in the paint for her team.

Meanwhile, Champion (13-6, 1-1 in 27-4A) was shooting 1 of 16 from the three-point line.

Champion Coach Jonathan Tate switched a zone defense in the second half, denying Overby the ball in the paint. Champion also pressed more, forcing a Tivy team with a six-deep rotation to battle their way to the frontcourt.

Once Grandjean’s outside shot started falling, the Chargers were on their way.

Champion started the half with an 8-0 run, including 2 Grandjean threes, to close the gap to 27-21. After Tivy built the lead back up to 32-25, Champion went on a 11-0 run, including 2 more Grandjean threes, which extended into the fourth and gave the Chargers the lead for good. As the Chargers were pulling away in the fourth, Megan Burns and Katie Smith each added a three-pointer.

Grandjean scored 5 in the first half and 17 in the second to finish with 6 three-point baskets and a season-high 22 points. Hilary Lumpkins scored 9, including 7 in the second half, and escaped an aggressive Tivy defense with fine ball-handling.

Overby, who scored 12 in the first half, added just 1 point in the second half. Sophomore Kelsi Wilmot added 11 for the Lady Antlers.

The victory put Champion alone in 4th place in 27-4A. Tivy is now a half-game behind Champion at 1-2 in district play.

Good Tuesday morning, fellow readers!

We want to take time out to thank you for your patronage over the past seven and a half years.

But we have noticed a few things that are confusing our readers, coaches, parents, and high school students, so we felt the need to clear them up.

1. Here’s an except of an e-mail we received - similar to many we have gotten. It has been edited as to not reveal the identity of the person…

Hi Jay

I am a parent and booster club member from a certain school. I paid for my subscription in October, the same day one of your representatives from SA sports came to our booster club meeting. I signed up for the magazine that night because he said our Girls basketball was going to be in the next issue. I asked him if I were to subsribe tonight would it be in time to receive that particular issue. He said yes. However, I have not received that issue or any other issues of the magazine.

Could you please help me resolve this situation? I want the issue featuring our Girls Basketball plus the other 5 that I paid for. If this cannot be resolved I would like my money to be refunded. Please see contact information below.

There was another high school sports magazine that was released that has sinced ceased printing operations. This magazine has nothing to do with SAsports.com. However, we have had at least 18 coaches and over 100 parents that believed it was associated with SAsports.com. I am sorry you were misled. We weren’t at that booster club meeting.

If the magazine you hold in your hands doesn’t have the SAsports.com logo on the front cover, it’s not SAsports.com.

Also, we are still having trouble with basketball scores and stats that are sent in to the local paper, and some believe that they are also getting to us.

Make no mistake - we want you to send them into the local paper. But if you’re not e-mailing them to jaytope@sasports.com or FAXing them to 210-595-6216, we aren’t getting them. SAsports.com is not associated with My SA, My San Antonio, or SA Gametime. Those are all arms of the Express-News. We are a direct competitor of the Express-News. But again, we insist that you send scores and stats to them, as well as us.

Please add us to your contact list. After all, we’ve been covering area high school athletes for almost 8 years now, and will continue to promote the positive publicity of high school students and activities.

Thanks for your time, and God bless you all.
