The Churchill Chargers scored in every inning except the first, putting together a workmanlike 12-0 victory over the Lee Volunteers Thursday afternoon at North East Stadium.
The win keeps Churchill (10-10, 5-2 in 26-5A) in a tie with Madison for third place in 26-5A at two district losses; the Chargers and Mavericks are now two games ahead of Judson and MacArthur in the loss column for the last two playoff spots in 26-5A. Lee, which started 26-5A play at 2-1, falls to 2-5 in district and 6-15 overall.
Churchill pitcher Nick Bolleter went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out 10. Lee center fielder Joseph Martinez drew a 10-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the first; Bolleter did not walk another batter the entire game. Bolletor completed his 7 innings on about 100 pitches.
Lee starter Virgil Sanchez had great movement on his pitches, but lapses of control and defense cost the Volunteers. Lee pitchers gave up 10 hits and 11 walks, and the team committed 4 errors. Of the 12 runs Churchill scored, only 5 were earned. Charger hitters drove in 6 runs, only 3 with hits.
Churchill catcher Ryan Syring led off the second with a basehit; his courtesy runner Michael Kraft went to second on a Grayson Howard groundout. Chris Fewell walked, then one out later Dustin Aguilar singled up the middle to give Churchill the lead.
The Chargers scored 3 in the 5th on 1 hit, and 3 more in the 7th without a hit.
Lee got both the game’s extra base hits. In the fourth, with Xavier Melendez on first, Javier Figueroa doubled to the left field gap. Melendez held at third, and Bolleter got David Peterson to ground out to third to end the threat. In the fifth, with Danny Mendez on first, Jordan Leyva doubled to the left field wall, but again the runner held at third. Bolleter got Melendez to ground to third base to end that threat as well.
The Chargers will complete their first round of district play against the Smithson Valley Rangers Tuesday afternoon at North East Stadium. Lee will complete their first round of district against the MacArthur Brahmas in the second game of the North East Stadium doubleheader.
