When the wind is blowing out at North East Stadium, offensive numbers skyrocket.
Nick Lee drove in 5 runs and Bryan Ehrlich 3 as the Madison Mavericks took a 13-11 victory over the MacArthur Brahmas Wednesday afternoon at North East Stadium.
The win, combined with Lee’s loss to Judson, put Madison in a two-way tie with Churchill in the loss column for third place in 26-5A. Madison is now 13-8 for the year and 5-2 in district; MacArthur is 13-9 for the year, but 2-4 in district.
Madison took the lead for good in the 5th inning off losing pitcher Caleb Whitley. Joey Boyd led off with a basehit to center, and was sacrificed to second by Robert Chavez. One out later, Ehrlich doubled home Boyd to give Madison their first lead. Julian Duran reached on an error with Ehrlich going to third. Duran stole second on a 1-2 pitch to Nick Lee, then he and Ehrlich scored on a basehit to center by Nick Lee.
Madison got an insurance run in the sixth. Devin Myler hit a long fly ball off the top of the left field wall. It bounced high but was caught by left fielder Rene Siller. Madison argued that the ball was a home run, but the umpires stopped Myler at second base. Myler’s pinch runner Austin Loza went to third on a single up the middle by Taylor Gesell, then the Mavericks performed a delayed steal of home. Gesell drew the attention of pitcher Caleb Whitley, and while he drew a throw to first baseman Eric Evans, Loza scored to make it 13-9.
MacArthur’s Michael Garza crushed a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 13-11. In the seventh, Rene Siller led off by getting plunked, but with the tying run at the plate, winning pitcher Brandon Clark worked out of the jam. Matt Harrell and Johnny Holman flied out to right, and Michael Ramirez struck to leave pinch runner Brett McCord stranded on first.
The Brahmas started the scoring with a five-run rally in the first. Garza reached on a two-out error, then seven more Brahmas reached, resulting in 5 runs.
Madison responded with a five-run top of the second, featuring a RBI hits by James Silva, Bryan Ehrlich, and Nick Lee. Garza scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second to give the Brahmas the lead again. MacArthur added three in the third with a two-run triple by Aaron McNeil and an RBI-groundout by Eric Evans.
But Madison scored 4 in the 4th, their rally highlighted by a 2-run singled by Paul Silva. Lee scored on an error to tie the game at 9-9, then Madison’s rally in the fifth gave them the lead for good.
