Reagan starting pitcher Carter Hahn struck out 10 as the Reagan Rattlers turned in a dominating performance, winning 15-2 in 5 innings over the Roosevelt Rough Riders Saturday afternoon at North East Stadium.
With the win, #1 Reagan went to 24-2 overall and 11-0 in District 26-5A play, clinching a playoff berth with three weeks to go in the regular season. Roosevelt falls to 4-19-1 overall and 0-11 in 26-5A.
The visiting Rattlers wasted no time taking command in the first inning, pounding three triples (Joseph Mengele, Casey Selsor, Derrick Walls) and a homer to straight-away center over the 371 sign (Vinny Postert) in the first inning on the way to a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, after giving up a leadoff double to Brandon Armstrong, Carter Hahn (5-0) struck out 6 of the next 7 Rough Riders he faced.
Reagan built on their lead when Selsor doubled and scored in the second to make it 8-0. In the top of the third, Reagan took advantage of two hits and two Roosevelt errors to score 3. They also began substituting, as Reagan coach Chans Chapman sent Ryne Head in to pinch-hit for Selsor.
Roosevelt put across a run in the third when Julian Reyes drew a one-out walk, went to second on a two-out single by Sean Alonzo, and scored on single by Larry Reyes, making it 11-1 Reagan. Hahn struck out Colton Rodriguez swinging to end the threat.
Reagan got the run back and extra in the 4th. James Spiers hit a one-out double down the right field line, then score on a triple into the left field gap by Ben Mrachek. Mrachek scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-1. Reagan added two in the fifth on a 2-run homer by backup catcher Adam Blue.
Roosevelt got their last run on a two-out double by Sean O’Brien off relief pitcher/starting first baseman Brad Hall.
By the end of the game, Reagan used 4 different center fielders (Robbie Van Cour, Joseph Mengele, Ryne Head, and Taylor Morris.) Of Reagan’s 12 hits, two were doubles, four were triples and two more were homers. And despite scoring 15 runs in 5 innings, Reagan left only 2 runners on base.
