Burbank started spring break on a rough note with a loss to Jefferson on Monday. The Bulldogs looked to get back on track Wednesday and hand Brackenridge a loss, putting them in a tie for first. It was not going to be easy.

Brackenridge came out swinging with two hits in the first, but could not produce a run. The Bulldogs did the same after Samantha Guerrero hit a double down the 3rd base line.

The Bulldogs held their ground on defense in the 2nd inning with a strikeout, pop up to first, and a line drive caught by 3rd baseman Nicole Rodriguez.

In the third the Eagles caught a break as pinch runner Hilary Hernandez for Burbank left the bag early. Burbank managed to get another on and with a nice sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez the runner was able to advance to second. Nina Garcia had a nice line drive to left field, putting runners on the corners for the Bulldogs. With two outs it brought up Angel Castro who ended up popping up in foul territory. Brack held Burbank leaving two on in the 3rd.

To start the 4th, Brack’s Megan Sotello started things off with a triple. She scored soon after Desirae Rodriguez hit a double, giving Brack a one run lead in the 4th.

After scoring a run in the top of the 4th Desirae Rodriguez returned to the mound, forcing a ground out to start the bottom of the 4th. After a walk, Rodriguez gave up a double to Burbank’s Stephanie Contreras to tie the game. Rodriguez came back to strike out Bianca Salinas, but ended up walking Jelena Springs to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. That brought up #9 Jessica Tijerina for the Bulldogs, who came up with a double down the left field line, scoring Contreras from second. At the end of the 4th Burbank came away with 2 runs to take the lead.

In the 5th both teams went down 1- 2- 3 to retire the sides. The Eagles were still down 2-1 at the end of the 5th.

The Bulldogs shut the Eagles down getting three outs quickly. In the bottom of the 6th the Eagles had out hit the Bulldogs and were only down one, when things started getting a little shaky.

Burbank’s Stephanie Contreras collected a double and Bianca Salinas got hit by a pitch, putting runners on 1st and 2nd for the Bulldogs. Jelena Springs hit a double down the 3rd base line to score Contreras. Two passed balls by the Eagles scored two runs as Burbank now lead 5 to 1, with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Brack struck out Nina Garcia for out number two. Sotello for Brack had some troubles behind the plate this afternoon. Once again another passed ball got by her. Burbank’s Castro had a nice hit down the left field line to score another run for the Bulldogs. Burbank ended the inning scoring five runs to take a 7-1 lead into the seventh.

The Eagles looked to try to make a come back in the 7th. Lupe Leon reached on an error and Rosario Urrabazo had a hard hit to short to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Coach Ross Ramirez made his way to the mount to settle down the Lady Bulldogs as Brack’s Bianca Crawford stepped up to bat.

Crawford hit down the third baseline setting up the double play for the Bulldogs. Maria Flores reached on a fielding error bringing up Selena Nunez. Nunez hit a blooper to left scoring a run. Brack’s Sotello popped up to short to end the game, as the Bulldogs held on to win 7 to 2.

With the win the Bulldogs moved into a first place tie with the Eagles. Both teams will resume play next week.
