Holmes head volleyball coach Rose Ann Martinez, who has coached the Huskies for the past several years, has now accepted the same position at McCollum High School in the Harlandale ISD.
It marks a return to her roots, as Martinez is a 1989 Harlandale graduate. She also coached at Harlandale a decade ago, serving as a volleyball assistant and head basketball coach.
The move also opens up the Holmes head volleyball position. We will have the first word on that when the news breaks.

Shiner, Texas.
The first thing that you think of is probably not volleyball, but that has changed. The Comanche volleyball team made its first appearance at the UIL State Volleyball Championships this past November.
This past season’s trip to San Marcos had been a long time coming. Four years ago in 2005, Head Volleyball Coach Michelle Winkenwerder (Coach Wink) started three girls from the current team as freshmen. That year they lost to Round Top Carmine in the Region IV-1A regional final game, and have had a thirst to get to San Marcos ever since. As sophomores, the girls crossed the path of RTC again early in the playoffs and were denied their dream. In 2007, the Comanches found themselves again in the Regional Final game. This time it was Flatonia who put a stop to their dream. The Comanches only lost one player from that 2007 squad and were ready for their dream to be fulfilled as seniors. Their wish was granted this season as the Comanches represented Region IV-1A at the UIL State Volleyball Championships.
“In this region you can dream big, but you also have to ‘Go Big or Go Home’, said Coach Wink. “There are too many talented teams and coaches in this region to just dream. You have to be able to execute your game plans and with that add a little luck. Then dreams become reality.”
If you looked up the word ‘team’ in the dictionary, you would find the definition of the Shiner Volleyball team. Unlike most of the larger schools in the area, there were not a few players who carried the weight of the entire team.
“Everyone on the team has a role, and everyone knows that in order for us to be successful they have to function as a unit and perform their role to the best of their ability,” said Coach Wink. “This team knows that they win and lose together.”
This season the Comanches garnered a 31-7 record, which included a perfect 10-0 stint in district competition. The Shiner team played a schedule against former state competitors Flatonia, Columbus, Luling, and Poth. Of the 38 games played this season, 26 were against playoff teams, 13 against ranked teams, three teams that advanced to the regional tournament, and 15 Class AA and larger schools. It appears that the loaded schedule that Coach Wink put her team through paid off because they were ready for whomever was on the other side of the net. One of the biggest games that Shiner played this season was in the regional semi-finals against a state-ranked Leakey team. Many people had already predicted that Leakey would be the team to make it to San Marcos. However, the Comanches never doubted themselves. Against Leakey they dropped the first game, but came back fighting to take the next three to advance to the regional finals - sweeping Yorktown to earn their first state tournament appearance.
At the state tournament the Shiner team faced a team from Windthorst who was making their 19th straight tournament appearance. Windthorst knew what it is like to play in front of the crowd at the state tournament and Shiner was getting a taste of it for the first time. Shiner took the first game from the defending State champions 25-19. The Trojanettes came back fighting and captured the next three games of the match 25-19, 25-17, and 25-20. Leading the Comanches were Amber Shimek (17 dis, 2 aces), Ieisha Flowers (3 aces, 18 kills, 3 blocks, 14 digs), Alyssa Strauss (10 kills, 20 digs), Shelby Bernshausen (2 aces, 12 kills, 3 blocks, 8 digs), Caitlin Kalich (42 assists, 1 block), Lauren Haynes (7 kills, 2 blocks), Amanda Hibbs (2 aces, 9 digs), and Lauren Michalec (3 digs).
Being a 1A school, Shiner does not have the luxury of having volleyball-only athletes. Everyone on the team is involved in at least one other activity on campus. Also, no one plays club volleyball. Of the 15 players on the 2008 State Semi-Finalist team, six are 2008 State Class A Softball Champions, two are Regional Tennis Players, five are multiple state advancers in One-Act Play (along with their director Coach Wink), five have competed in the Regional Track Meet, and 10 have been varsity cheerleaders.
Coach Wink had read an article that said only 1% of all Texas athletes get to represent their school at a State Tournament.
“With that said, you truly realize the great accomplishments of this squad. Without my fellow coaches around the state who have given me support, ideas, and knowledge, this would not have been possible. Ultimately, that is what being a true winner is all about,” Wink said.
Just remember this the next time you drive through Shiner - there is a lot more to the town than you think. There is a great high school with wonderful kids who are willing to leave it all out on the court or field.

For the first time since SAsports.com began in 2001, there won’t be a state volleyball champion among our 130 schools that we cover.
Both the Lake Travis Cavaliers and the Shiner Comanches fell at the state tourney, with Lake Travis losing in five games, and Shiner in four.
Congratulations to both programs; less than one percent of Texas high school athletes have the opportunity to play at a state tournament, and these girls worked hard to get there this year.
Also, congratulations to Antonian and Incarnate Word volleyball teams; two weeks earlier, they played at the TAPPS state tournament, with the Apaches falling in the semifinals, and the Shamrocks losing in the finals.
